Hi everyone!
I’m experimenting with Unreal, trying to create a world as in No Man’s Sky / Outer Wilds.
Exporing the internet I found that there wasn’t really any support for spherical landscape creation using Unreal’s built-in landscape tool.
I’ve tried turning the default landscape plane into a semi-sphere and modifying the topography / adding foliage to it but it works really inconsistently (it messes up near the “equator” line of the sphere when adding foliage or modifying terrain). See the attachment for reference:
Then I found out about the Voxel plugin, which lets you create / sculpt terrain and apply foliage to spherical terrain, but placing meshes onto the terrain is a paid feature, and I can’t afford a license right now.
Looking for ways to work around this, I think I’m left with two options, and I’d really appreciate your input:
- would it be performant to add trees / grass / foliage by hand? i mean, apart from being really time consuming, would it be heavier for to render compared to using the built in landscape tool?
- is there any way to sculpt / work with spherical terrain without plugins?
Thanks a lot
