Hi there,
I was working on a project with about 900 images, as I was adding more CPs it crashed and now I am unable to open my project again. I am using the Promo version and when I open the project it says “unexpected program state”.
I do see that the sfm.dat as well as controlpoints0.dat files are still there. How can I reload these manually?
Thanks!
Ervine
Hi Ervine Lin
When did the crash occur? What were you doing when it crashed?
Do you have the latest version ( 1952 ) installed ? https://www.capturingreality.com/My
If you cannot open an RC project, then it seems like some sort of data corruption…
For the unexpected state, check the license status (if it is active) here: https://www.capturingreality.com/my.licenses.
Hello,
I was in the process of adding control points. I believe I was scanning through photos rapidly by holding down the arrow key. Then the system stalled, nothing moved and my PC rebooted itself.
I just installed it, so yes I would think it is the latest version.
License is active as I just paid for it 2 days ago.
I have gone in and redid my work, but hopefully this won’t happen again.

Hi Ervine Lin
It looks like a PC “resource” issue, when it even rebooted the PC…
I highly recommend you to look for drivers’ update for your Motherboard and other devices, as it looks like a driver related issue…
( highly likely the storage driver -> MoBo drivers )
I have a feeling you are right, I might have run out of hard disk space!
Moved things around and managed to get everything aligned just fine…
Thanks a lot for the amazing work,
Ervine
Okay this is not good.
I paused my reconstruction, went about doing something else on the computer.
Computer crashed again, and now its back to “Unexpected Program State - Failed to load project node /RealityCapture”
All the files are still there, is there no way to revive this manually? I lost hours of work.
Please advise,
Ervine
Hi Ervine Lin
Can you put here your PC specification? ucp.php?i=profile&mode=signature
So that I can see what exact PC configuration you have there. And the most important is the PSU wattage and how old it is…

Updated signature.
Do note that I have previously successfully reconstructed other projects.
Also I was not doing anything at the time of this crash. CR was paused.
Please tell me there is a way to revive this project.
EDIT: Seems like its the controlpoint dat file that is corrupted.

Hi Ervine Lin
RC was working flawlessly and when it crashed, as you describe it, then it is a PC related issue. If you cannot open the file again, then it is highly likely a STORAGE issue, so it has damaged the RC project files. This issue could be related to PSU ( PowerSupplyUnit )
During reconstruction it uses a lot of power, so if the PSU is not capable of delivering enough power to CPU-GPU + other PC “devices”, it will crash or restart.
If it crashed after reconstruction, it is possible that the files got CORRUPTED by restart…
Therefore I highly recommend you to update all drivers in the PC, as the first thing + I need to see the PSU Wattage ( or the precise PSU model number for a check). Or try filling out everything here: http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/ and hit CALCULATE. And send me the screenshot, please.

I suspect you are right… I will update my drivers.
In the meanwhile I found a workaround solution. I moved the existing files to another folder. Then started a new empty project, and loaded the photos in and hit save. This created a new controlpoint.dat file. I then edited the project file name to include my previously aligned sfm model and copied the respective files back into the folder.
Fired it up and now I am reconstructing the mesh.
Lost my control points but at least I was already done with that part, just needed to reconstruct the mesh.
Fingers crossed.
Hi Ervine Lin
so it looks like a corrupted control point file anyway…
OK, I am happy that you managed to solve it even though with this “hack”
But keep in mind to update the drivers and the PSU calculator results…
got the same problem, closed the reality capture, opened it again, but not on stem, then program told that there are something wrong with license or steam, closed. Opened RC via steam and got the same error message error unexpected program state failed to load project node/RealityCapture “hack” do not helps lost 6h clicking control points ;/ so it would be great that there would be possibility to import all that metadata, sfm files to new projects. Also from now I will save two copies the same project.
Using steam License, bought two days ago for 1 month. Redone all work again, got draft alignment, added additional ground control point, left to calculate for night, got some errors at morning that some of the blocks was not created, but got the 3d model… Saved the project. Also made a copy of project directory. Started reconstruction on high details, after an half an our got error message ~“access denied” but the RC not crashed, so started the same reconstruction on normal setting, but with the same error message, so decided to close and open project again. But then i get the same unexpected program state Failed to load project node /RealityCapture. My project contain 1200photos with 19 ground control points, windows 10 24gb RAM, SAMSUNG 850 PRO SSD, GF GTX760. Before RC used photo scan, ********** and none of them gave me anything like that… Reconstructions of RC is really great and better than other programs, but how to use the program then you usually can’t open the projects? Also tried to open with demo version and got same errors.
Hi tomas.valaitis
Is it possible to get the RCPROJ + folders and one image for inspection ?
uploaded files in there:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ … sp=sharing
Actually if on opening project I got crash, than sometimes it possible to open it using windows visual studio debugger (added screen shots) Or sometimes project just opens normally after opening and closing other projects. Also then i got lucky and got possibility to open my necessary project i exported Registration and thought that my work now is safe. But then i tried to import it into another project, I also get “Unexpected program state” but get imported 5 control point of 19 and no other components.
