Iā€™m answering my own question so that others who have the same bug will know.

You have to delete the Saved folder in the Project folder.
You can back it up if you like. It houses settings and rendered images, so window configurations will be reset, but it wonā€™t affect the actual engine at all.

Is there any info on why this is caused? Has anyone else experienced this?

This is hindering my teamā€™s progress, and if possible, Iā€™d like for it to be tracked as a bug for investigation/fixing.

Huh. We used to encounter this frequently, though not for a few months now, and deleting the entire Saved folder would always fix the problem.

Still having this issue also, on different machines ā€“ even after deleting the Saved folder. This has completely halted production.

Deleting Saved did not solve this for us. Any understanding as to what else causes this? It was only encountered a couple of days ago, but is happening on two projects regardless of machine. On is a clone of the other. The original one had not been updated or touched at all for several days prior to the problem, and the clone had been worked on just fine for a couple of days prior to the problem of crashing when trying to Save.

OK, from a couple of other sources (which I lost track of where they are), I have replicated this solution across several projects that were having the same problem (we found more, all clones of one that did not previously have problems, and all of which also didnā€™t have problems until a couple of days ago).

Here is my ritual:

If UE4 crashes during ā€˜Save Asā€™ or ā€˜Saveā€™ (usually on Maps/Levels [.umaps]) ā€¦

1) FIX REDIRECTORS

1.1) From the Content root, right-click on each folder, and choose ā€˜Fix Up Redirectors in Folderā€™.

1.2) Then do a File > ā€˜Save Allā€™ ā€“ this should trigger and process saving anything that was updated by the various ā€˜Fix Up Redirectors in Folderā€™ commands.

1.3) File > ā€˜Save Currentā€™

1.4) If that went OK, then File > ā€˜Save Currentā€™ again (I had this fail once, and had to re-do the ā€˜Fix Up Redirectors in Folderā€™).

1.5) Then do a File > ā€˜Save Allā€™ ā€“ nothing ā€œshouldā€ happen here, but may ā€“ if so, cross your fingers.

2) TRY Save As AGAIN

2.1) Now try the ā€˜Save Asā€™ on the currently opened map (this should be the one that was crashing).

2.2) This may likely take longer that usual, grab a bagle.

2.3) Change your Project Settings - Maps - default settings to the new Map.

2.4) Close the Engine.

3) TEST THE FIX

3.1) Re-open the project.

3.2) Try doing another ā€˜Save Asā€™.

If it still crashes ā€¦ call a more nerdier nerd.

Hm. Iā€™ve tried fixing redirectors in the past, and didnā€™t have any luck.

You can also delete the Intermediate folder and that will sometimes help.
Epic, we are experiencing this issue pretty frequently. We arenā€™t using source control for certain projects, so itā€™s a number of people working off of a project stored on the server. Is that the issue? Is there an easy fix? Because having all the artists close out of the engine, deleting Saved and Intermediate, and reopening isnā€™t very efficient when it happens every few days.

I followed all your steps, Iā€™m really nerdy too, but it only worked with some pretty simple levels.

When I try to SAVE AS a more complex level ā€¦ crashes

I cannot believe such a program has not such a functionality, itā€™s so important to make a good progress and keep old versions available!!

I did delete the ā€œSavedā€ folder, but it continues crashing when ā€œSave current asā€

What a pain in the as!!

Please, some super master of the universe developer, fix this simple function ā€¦ or at least take the ā€œsave current asā€ option away from the File menuā€¦ so we it doesnā€™t remember us what we cannot do every time.
