Crash on startup

Hi everyone. I installed 5.5.3, and I get a crash on startup. Specifically, I choose something like “Single player” as a start point and then it seems to load, then crashes with the text at the end of this post.

I’m running as admin, installed the latest drivers, same thing. Running Ryzen 5800X, 64gb RAAM, 4090, oodles of disk space. Don’t have any problems anywhere else as far as I’ve seen, and UE did used to work.

A year or so ago I ran UE at version 5.1 fine, making several projects with quite complex environments. Now even those old ones will no longer load. In any case, a new install of 5.5.3 with no prior projects crashes at startup.

This is probably a very common issue but I didn’t see anything pinned, and my brief searches mentions admin mode & video drivers, which I’ve already tried.

Is there an established troubleshooting procedure I can look at, or does anyone happen to know what the problem would be? The crash text is as follows:
Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION reading address 0x0000000000000028

If i remember correctly, this has to do that the engine is reding from a invalid memory address.

Try to “Verify” the engine version in Epic Games → Library → Dropdown menu next to 5.5.3 Launch button → Verify

This solved it for me when I had some similar crashes upon start.

Also could be a Direct X 12 problem.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I solved the issue by re-installing a clean version of the latest graphics drivers. I googled “nvwgf2umx” and saw that many people were experiencing UE game failures with that reference, and in each case a clean driver installation fixed it. It wasn’t enough to merely install latest drivers, I had to reset all user settings also.

So I guess there is a setting in NVidia settings that can cause UE games, including Unreal Engine editor itself, to fail.
