Crash on Import FBX

Hey, I’m trying to import some FBX files into UDK. The imports keep causing consistent crashes of unreal editor. My editor launch log is as follows:

Any ideas on what is causing this?

Well from what i see from he log this is from some coocked game.Are you trying to import a fbx or is it a upk file?If it was a upk this is understandable to get an error but for a fbx sounds a little strange.Either way its not finding stuff on import.Did you try to import the fbx in a modeling program to se if it shows?

could also be the fact you have used a newer version of fbx to export the content, atm i’ve no idea if udk/chivalrymedievalwarfare supports the newer fbx, try using the autodesk fbx converter to save it as an older version

Alright so I exported the file from Maya as an earlier version of FBX (FBX 2013). However importing the file is still causing a CTD.

Basically I’m exporting these FBXs from cooked Animsets. They can be exported and then immediately reimported apparently without any problems. The only trouble arises when I save them as a 3DS Max or Maya file, and then export them from there as an FBX. I’m not sure why that extra step creates problems, and in fact a few times I’ve done this process and had no issues with crashing. It’s really strange.

I’ve done some further testing and found that this error seems to be connected to a certain error message I’m getting while exporting from Maya: “Warning: Animation curve tangent type changed to User”, seems like every bone is affected. Anyone know what this means?

Not sure if this is the same, but I get crashes all the time when importing lods on static meshes using FBX. After repeated tries it usually works :S

I’ve also has crashes when importing a mesh which has a collision mesh with un-capped holes in it.

The fbx pipeline page https://udn.epicgames.com/Three/FBXStaticMeshPipeline.html shows what kinds of collision meshes are allowed. Collision meshes with holes are a specific no-no. Anytime I’ve had to make a collision mesh with a hole in it, or any shape too complicated to fit into UDK auto-collision generator, I do this:

In Blender, import the fbx file you want to use.
Create some cube primitives.
In object mode, move the cubes where you want them.
In edit mode, stretch the cubes and move edges or whatever to best approximate the shape of your fbx model.
In object mode, select all of the cube primitives that you’ve shaped into a collision mesh, and press ctrl-J to join them.
Name the collision mesh UCX_[something], where [something] is the name of your original mesh.
Export the file as fbx. Import into UDK.

Back to OmarWarOgre’s issue though, I’ve had trouble importing animations with my skeletal meshes. I always import just the skeletal mesh at first, with no animations. I save all of the animations as separate fbx files. Then I create a new animset, open it up, and import the animations directly into there, and that has worked well for me. (Sorry, not at my dev computer at the moment, and I don’t remember the specific steps.) I don’t know what could be causing the Maya-to-fbx-to-crash issue, but in a few of my workflows, something just doesn’t export correctly, and I have to go into another program just to open and re-save a file so my next program can use it. (I do this with Photoshop and GIMP pretty often. And it’s always Photoshop that has the problems.) It might be insulting to an Autodesk user to suggest that Blender might handle the export better, but you never know until you try…

Edit: Oh, and regarding the animation curve, it sounds like there are some preset animation curves, and you probably fine-tuned something, changing it to a user-defined animation curve, and the export probably didn’t like that.

Try to save the file as .obj, or import this .fbx in Maya and export again with other name.

I’m reading various related posts to this problem of UE4 crashing and freezing at 75% on fbx import, seems there’s a number of culprits, e.g. msi audio, checking Combine Meshes, export setting in Maya and Blender, issues related to keyframes and more. But, none of these apply in my case, though I also experience the freezing at 75% and crashing. Just days ago my workflow exporting numerous multi-part meshes as FBX 2014 from Reality Capture, adding Smoothing Group in 3DS and importing to UE4 worked just fine. Today I can’t import even a single of these. I took 3DS out of the mix, coming straight from RC, no difference. I tried importing an fbx that was already in UE4 from before and it also won’t import now. Any these meshes open in Maya and 3DS, so seems RC isn’t the issue. Any thoughts?
