Course: Animation Fellowship Week 1

From a general point of view:

  • FBX: it is maintenance of the feature. There is currently a refactoring of the import framework that will open the way for more customization of the import (not just FBX). Feature wise there is no change planned regarding FBX.
  • USD: as you mentioned there is already an implementation. Epic has been and is still adding features to support more of USD and also improve the integration in UE.
    The plugins are still marked Beta, however some clients (especially in Virtual Production) are already using it for production. In short you can use USD, but keep in mind it is still moving pieces, not all features are in and paint is still drying.

Overall, I would recommend getting familiar with both routes FBX/USD, see which combination of those fits better your pipeline and keep an eye on USD progress after each new version of the engine.

There is no point in preparing so much material and then deleting it. There is no time to see, study and practice the content even if you have nothing else to do.
Things are not done in a hurry; although the topic interests me a lot, I prefer to see other tutorials that I know I will be able to finish at my own pace. A shame.
