"Couldn't update file associations" for Project files

Whenever I run UnrealVersionSelector.exe /fileassociations (or trigger it through the Epic Games Launcher’s “Fix file associations” popup), it fails with a generic error stating that it could not update file associations.

I’ve also already tried copyingUnrealVersionSelector.exe from the Epic Games Launcher folder (C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Launcher\Engine\Binaries\Win64\) into the Engine binaries folder (...\UE_5.x\Engine\Binaries\Win64\) and ran /register and /fileassociations as Administrator with no success.

I’ve also uninstalled/reinstalled multiple UE_5.x versions, but that hasn’t worked either.

I should also note that I had to do a full nuke/reinstall of Windows in the past 1-2 weeks on my C:\ drive, but I kept my engines/projects on a separate drive. After reinstalling Windows and Epic Games Launcher is when my issue started occurring.

Update:

Had to go into my registry and clean out the `.uproject` and`.uplugin` keys in `Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\`

After than, the auto-fix process that Epic Games Launcher does on boot went smoothly.

Hi

I experienced the same issue.
However, I couldn’t find any “.uproject” or “.uplugin” files in “Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\”.
Do you know how to resolve this?
I apologize for reaching out out of the blue.

Thank you in advance.
