Corrupted Levels after update from 5.4 to 5.7

Hello, i have recently upgraded my project from 5.4 to 5.7 ( i made a copy )

Everything seems to work fine, exept only the default level is working.

When i try to open any other level made with 5.4, the editor instantly crashes.

It seems to be a issue with the layer info for the landscape, it says there is an error in a cpp file, but i cannot find it and even then, i will have no clue what to change to fix the issue.

Also the wierd thing is the level that works fine have some heavy landscape on it with multiple layers and everything works just fine.

Another wierd thing ; In my level that is working, i have a TP zone to enter other levels, and if i use this to transition to another level in game, it works fine ! the level loads without issues and i can play on it, but opening the EXACT same level from the content drawer instantly crashes unreal.

Checking through your log, the key line seems to be the following:

This is due the engine checking for your landscape layer info, particularly internal names, and failing to make an exact match. As for why this is not happening in 5.4, it’s probably being treated as a silent check, and running the game anyway, while 5.7 has stricter checks, resulting in the crash you are getting. Most likely, a landscape layer was renamed at some point in 5.4 by renaming the LayerInfo asset in the Content Browser, which updates the file name, but not the internal name.

Now, let’s tackle a few possible methods on how to resolve this mismatch:

  • First of all, the most simple fix, select the folder containing your affected levels in the browser, right-click on it, and apply “Fix Up Redirectors”. If the mismatch is detected in the chain, this should repair it.

  • Next, check your asset’s layer info, via browser. They are usually named LI_Grass, LI_Rock, etc. Go one by one, and look at the layer name inside, and ensure it matches with the correct asset filename. If any of them doesn’t, that’s where the issue is, you just need to rename the asset back to the correct internal name. Save all changes, and test again.

  • If the issue still persists, you can try opening your old 5.4 build, and resolve the problem from the root, with the same method as the step above. Fix any file name that is blank or mismatched, save, and migrate the affected level back to your 5.7 project.

Sorry for the late reply.

So i tried to fixup the redirectors, but to do so, it needs to first load the assets, which crashed the editor too.

Then i checked the layer info names by opening the Layer info assets and checked if the names where matching, example :
the Asset : Dirt_LayerInfo when opened should have “Dirt” in the name field.

But everything was matching.

So i went back to the non-updated project in 5.4 and i finally figured out what was the issue.
I loaded the level that was not working in 5.7 and entered Landscape mode, here, in the Paint tab i noticed the layers name issue.

So basically, in some specific levels one of the landscape layers was not named properly and that was the issue. i opened all levels affected, and renamed all of theses layers, updated the project again to 5.7 and the issue was finally fixed.
