Control rig meshes

I’m trying to make a animation for a sword swing, but I can’t figure out how to get the sword to appear in the character’s hand while using the control rig in sequencer. I know I can add it as an additional mesh in the Control Rig blueprint but that’s just a preview, it doesn’t stay with the character when you go to animate in sequencer. I figured out how to swap the skeletal mesh from the character to the sword, but viewing just one at a time isn’t very helpful. Does anyone know a work around?

Attach it to a socket on the bones (hand)

I have tried that, while the sword will show up in the skeletal mesh file it will not show up in the control rig for that skeletal mesh.
