Constant slate crashes using the editor

Without exaggerating, I am able to get the editor to crash every few minutes (even sooner). I could just open a project, and move the cursor and it crashes. There doesn’t seem to be any specific thing which causes it. An example is as follows:

I seem to be having more problems than everyone else :), is there anything known which may be causing this onslaught of crashes when using the editor? It happens with any project, even the content examples. Something that’s confusing me is the d:\ drive usage (I don’t have one), is this something Unreal creates (RAM Disk?) I am using an SSD cache drive, I don’t know if this causes complications?

Bear in mind that the 4.8 previews are just that, and as such they’re not going to have the stability of an official release. That said, can you give me more information so I can check that this crash is a known one?

What preview version are you using? It looks like you’re using source and Windows, correct? Are you seeing the same crashes on a blank project with no starter content? If you have the entire crash logs can you post them here as a txt file?

Yes I can appreciate that. I was using preview 4 in this particular case but had similar problems with 4.7, which makes it semi-unusable. I will work for a few minutes then it will randomly crash (Ive hit send & restart more times than I can remember, I would consider an enhancement to just have a “restart” option as I didnt want to send them all but it was more convenient for me :)).

I am using Windows 7, but havent built ue4 from source. I’m beginning to think it’s something to do with my setup (which is why I was querying the d:/). You’ve caught me at a bad time as I am currently upgrading my PC (and was dedusting my tower, cleaned up the CPU thermal paste and realised I didnt have any thermal paste left, doh), so I am Desktopless for a couple days till it arrives, and am responding on my phone. Will get you the detailed crash logs soon, not sure where they are stored, I’m sure I can find them :slight_smile: thanks for your response.

No problemo. When I went digging around for other similar crashes that I’ve seen with those errors, a few mentioned their computer setup might be related, so you might actually be on the right track (without logs I can’t make any definitive diagnoses, though). I am curious to see if you get the same crashes after you’ve upgraded your machine and tried a blank project reproduction.

When you do get a chance, here’s the instructions on where to find your crash logs. Good luck!

Thermal paste arrived, here are the logs. I can only upload 5 at a time, so just attached the last 5 (I have 33 more others from that same day if you want). I’ve bought parts to build a whole brand new PC (so I won’t really be upgrading my current system) :s

What I have tried is disconnecting my SSD cache drive, and it looks like that has done the job!! I’ve been able to seamlessly have 3 projects open and thrash the UI between them. I don’t want to sound too optimistic, as still need to do some more thorough testing (I’ve not played around with it for long, and it’s late now). Will have a good test over the weekend. But it might be something to look at!!! (In case you didn’t know, it’s a drive that runs in the background which caches frequent or most recently used data, was useful when SSD’s were very expensive, so you didn’t need to buy one with much storage).

thanks for the logs. I can tell you that since the 4.8 preview 4 there were a number of slate/widget crash fixes integrated that had similar call stacks, so even if it wasn’t something with your hardware, there has been an astounding number of bug fixes of late.

So since you’re not having a problem anymore, I’m going to mark this as resolved. Come back to this issue if you start seeing your crash again.
