Constant crashing

Hi Guys,

I am experimenting with creating an environment based on open source images. And yes I know this has a large number of inherent issues. However, I have been going fine for some time and I’ve been creating a large number of control points (about 45), so far it has been coming together well.

However in the last two days almost every time I try and align images (after having created a few extra control points) the software continually crashes. I have uploaded numerous crash reports.

Please can someone look at the crash reports that have been sent through and give me some help on what is going wrong.

Andrew

P.S. how do you attach images to posts from the computer?

further to the above, when I tried to to reconstruct in normal detail I received the following error:

“invalid function call”

please can you help

Andrew

P.S. thinking I may need to re-install

Hi Andrew
Have you not changed paths to the images ??

No I haven’t changed image paths.

I reinstalled the software and attempted to create the mesh in normal detail. This time it didn’t crash it just appeared to hang about 1/3 of the way through processing - even after over 12 hours of processing.

every time I attempt to align images I get the crash (mini dump).

Can someone please give me some ideas as to why this is happening?

Do i have too many control points, is there too many low quality images etc?

I have uploaded dozens of crash reports - please can I get some feedback on the reports?

Cheers

Hi Andrew Seyderhelm
Please first fill out you signature with your PC configuration: ucp.php?i=profile&mode=signature
And please make a screenshot of your ALIGNMENT settings…

Further to the above - I am able to create and export a “Preview” mesh of my scene, it is only when I go to “Normal” that I get the invalid function call error (and also when texturing the mesh).

Please can someone offer some suggestions as to where to look?

How do I attach an image to the forum - it only appears to allow me to enter a URL?

Here are my settings (mainly default)

Hi Andrew Seyderhelm
How many images are there in the scene ? what file format ??

we need to pinpoint the issue step by step…

So you have NOT changed any image paths, as you mentioned, which is a bit strange behavior
but do you have the latest drivers for the Nvidia installed ?

I don’t believe I have changed any image paths. However - is there a way to replace/refresh images? When I import the images again it doesn’t overwrite the ones already there - I just end up with duplicates and double the image number. being able to replace images based on file name would be useful (and to be honest behaviour that is normal in most 3d packages).

ALL images are jpg.

there are 372 images (315 are currently being used across 5 components I am trying to consolidate).

There are 46 control points.

the entire scene is of Hadleigh Castle in England based on open source imagery. As already mentioned - I know this is not ideal but I am doing this as an experiment for work and really need to demonstrate the capacity of creating environments from open source imagery (to then be edited in Maya or Max).

The thing that strikes me as unusual is that I can create a Preview mesh (untextured) which is based on the point cloud but not a normal one - why is this?

I will double check the drivers and see if it makes a difference - I am also rolling back to an earlier version with fewer images and control points to see if it makes a difference.

On another note, the alignment and reconstruction often (once in every 3-5 times) hangs, i.e. it doesn’t give an error but the progress bar just stalls and doesn’t move (even after many hours - once over 12 hours). Any ideas why this is?

Just rolled back to an earlier version with 282 images and 38 control points and it worked in creating a “normal” mesh and texture. I will just start re-building from here (again)

Can I clarify a few things -

  1. can images come from different file paths, or must they all come from the same folder (if from the same folder why - might be worth changing in future versions)
  2. Is there a way to view the image file path and re-path it in RealityCapture?
3.When will the next update be released?
  3. Will a more exhaustive and detailed manual be released with more tutorials?

I’d still like some input on why the more recent versions crashed though if possible?

thanks for the advice

Cheers

Hi Andrew

I don’t believe I have changed any image paths. However - is there a way to replace/refresh images? When I import the images again it doesn’t overwrite the ones already there - I just end up with duplicates and double the image number. being able to replace images based on file name would be useful (and to be honest behaviour that is normal in most 3d packages).

This is a clear sign that image paths have been changed, if it did NOT add any image, the path would be OK.

  1. can images come from different file paths, or must they all come from the same folder (if from the same folder why - might be worth changing in future versions)

Yes, they can be in multiple folders, just if you have the SAME image names in different paths, it gets messy. then it is much better to edit the RCPROJ file manually with a good texture editor like EDIT++

  1. Is there a way to view the image file path and re-path it in RealityCapture?

You can do it next time you open the project - RC will ask you for the new paths, but again look for the issue regarding the same filenames in different folders…

3.When will the next update be released?

When it is ready to be released, after testing…

  1. Will a more exhaustive and detailed manual be released with more tutorials?

It is already at work and will be released in 2017

Hi Andrew,
I can see that this question has not been answered yet, so here it is:

When you create/edit your post, under the box for writing there is an ‘Upload attachment’ bookmark. Click it, choose a file, then click ‘Add the file’, you can also write a short comment to it. Once uploaded, you need to click in the desired position in the post and click on ‘Place inline’ afterwards. That is it…

Im sorry guys but there are issues with this software, it is not the image paths causing the crash/“Invalid function call”:

I rolled back to an earlier save and from that was able to build a “normal” model. However I wanted to re-build it with lower poly count so I reduced the “Maximal vertices count” to 500,000 from 1,000,000 (the default). I started building the model and the processing froze about 1/3 through (which happens 1/3 times). I used task manager to end the task, and restarted the computer.

Since then I get the crash. NOTHING else has changed. I have cleared the cache and now the level will not build. So there is clearly an issue with the software when building the mesh. It hangs and if forced to shut down will then corrupt all future efforts to rebuild.

finding this very frustrating, any help is appreciated.

Andrew

Hi guys (again)

I just aligned images in my scene. Then inspected the results and decided to remove/delete a Control Point (which I did). I then Aligned images again and I received an “unhandled exception”. The ONLY change was me deleting a control point.

again…some ideas on what settings to change to help address this would be appreciated.

Andrew

Hi Andrew Seyderhelm

I rolled back to an earlier save and from that was able to build a “normal” model. However I wanted to re-build it with lower poly count so I reduced the “Maximal vertices count” to 500,000 from 1,000,000 (the default). I started building the model and the processing froze about 1/3 through (which happens 1/3 times). I used task manager to end the task, and restarted the computer.

The default value is 5,000,000 vertices and this parameter is not used for limiting the final model triangle count, as its name says, it is per model part. When you end a reconstruction, then can easily use the SIMPLIFY tool and get the desired triangle count

Can you make a screenshot of the RECONSTRUCTION->SETTINGS so that I can see what changes have you done there…

another note contributing to my issues:

the abort processing button has NEVER worked, the software just hangs (I have left it for over 10 minutes and it never stops). As such I have been forced to “end process” RC which may be leading to some of the problems I am having.

thanks for the ongoing help

Andrew

Hi Andrew

I see lot of “bad settings” used…

First of all go to WORKFLOW->SETTINGS->CLEAR CACHE button and clear all cache folders…
Please set everything like here in this screenshot or, even better, RESET all your settings ( press and hold the left SHIFT and then start RC, it will ask you whether you want to reset all your settings to their DEFAULT values )

thanks for the advice, I did what you said and still got the “invalid function call” when reconstructing.

the fact that this happens on previously working models with NO changes leads me to believe the software is unstable. At least at this stage.

I’ll keep trying but I am a little disappointed.

Hi Andrew
when do you get the invalid function call ? on reconstruction ? what stage – start, end or ?

During reconstruction about 1/3 of the way into the processing.

I will add that I downloaded a proper sample set of images and I have had no issues at all. I emphasize that I am conducting an experiment, for work (I work in government), whereby we are trying to see what can be done with open source images. so clearly there will be poor quality images, missing sections etc. I have spent some hours trawling through the internet and I am creating a scene of Hadleigh Castle in the UK. I do have a working model but it only uses about 2/3 of the images I have.

How do you re-target images? e.g. lets say I use Photoshop to edit a picture that has already been loaded - does CR re-load the image automatically of do I have to manually re-import it?

thanks again for your comments and advice
