Just about every other day, at this point, when I try to load the Epic Games Launcher, I get the error ‘Connection to the server failed.’ I have read the fix actions stating to either play ‘-http=wininet’ or adding ‘UseLibCurl=False’ in BaseEngine.ini. Though both have worked to allow me access to the launcher, they then do not allow me to log into Fortnite. Once either of these commands have been put in, once I launcher Fortnite (if it even shows as online for me, when it’s online for friends and they’re playing), it will sit at Downloading Profile until it times out.
I have disabled Windows Firewall, Bitdefender, and Malwarebytes, and still receive the same error. I have port 5222 being forwarded to my static IP address. I have gone through most troubleshooting steps I have found from searching other issues somewhat similar to this, however, nothing fixes this, it seems to come through for an entire day, I’ll fight and troubleshoot all day long, then it will magically start working again. Last time it appears to instantly start working after I played with Windows Defender, but today, when I disabled all of my security applications, I confirmed that Windows Defender was also still disabled.
Please, any help to understand what’s happening and get a solid fix action would be greatly appreciated.
30 Dec 15: At this time, I have managed to regain access (it seems to stop working properly every other day). I uninstalled Bitdefender and used CCleaner to clean up all my temporary files on the computer and in the registry. I then rebooted and was able to play run the launcher prior to installing Bitdefender. I have reinstalled Bitdefender since I started playing, but haven’t been kicked just yet.
31 Dec 15: Unable to log into the launcher again. Disabled Bitdefender to no avail, attempting and uninstall of Bitdefender to determine the result. Uninstalling Bitdefender restored access, however, this leaves me without my primary firewall/antivirus software. Any assistance to figure out why, even with placing as many exceptions in Bitdefender as possible towards Epic Games Launcher, why I still can’t access the server with Bitdefender installed would be greatly appreciated.
I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble. This has just recently come up as an issue and is being investigated as OPP-3332. To help with the investigation, could you provide some information?
Which version of Bitdefender are you using? We have seen the issue with Bitdefender Total Security 2015. Bitdefender Anti Virus Plus does not seem to have the same issue.
You mentioned that you already have port 5222 forwarded to your IP, could you make sure that the following exception is allowed:
I will have to reinstall Bitdefender, and will update this post once I reinstall and add that url to the exception list. For the other questions:
I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2016.
-http=wininet does work for the launcher. My issue is that when I put this in, it allows me to log into the launcher, however, with -http=wininet added I cannot log into Fortnite. It will sit at Downloading Profile until the login times out. I already talked to their support about it. The error message goes away and I can log into the launcher when I include that switch, I just can’t access Fortnite once I do that.
Edit: At this time, I am able to log in with Bitdefender installed. However, in the past, I would be able to access the launcher with Bitdefender installed throughout that day. Then after shutting down for the night then logging in the next day, I’d get that error. So I will update this post again in the next 24-48 hours on whether the error cropped up.
A caveat, there is no way to add exclusions into Bitdefender by URL. Any exceptions are adding the local executable then adding the local and/or remote IP address along with the port. So I went into the firewall and added the path for the launcher executable and then pinged the url you gave me (52.3.35.6) and added that along with port 5222 allow through the firewall.
So as of tonight, approximately 1AM CST, the error kicked back in. I put thall the steps in place yesterday, over 24 hours ago. Played with no issues up until now. Then all of a sudden, in the middle of a game in Fortnite and the game disconnected, sending me to the login screen, and the game at that point was also displaying as offline in the Epic Games Launcher. Once I closed out the launcher and tried to log back in, I was given the same error as before. As soon as I uninstalled Bitdefender, I was able to successfully reconnect to the launcher.
That’s my current problem. However, based on your original response, you have not experienced any issues, and in turn didn’t have to do anything. My issue was that, from the look of the logs, something with SSL is not going properly and Bitdefender is blocking it outright. When I add in “-http=wininet” it allows me to access the launcher, but then doesn’t let me log into Fortnite.
Can I get a bit of clarification? In your last response:
“Once I closed out the launcher and tried to log back in, I was given the same error as before. As soon as I uninstalled Bitdefender, I was able to successfully reconnect to the launcher.”
The same error as in you could not connect to the launcher or you could connect to the launcher but you were not able to connect to Fortnite game servers?
Don’t know if this is of any help, but I had the “could not establish a web session” issue and disabling ALL protection from bitdefender actually solved the problem. I feel naked now :).
Correct, once I closed the Epic Launcher, I was unable to reconnect until I uninstalled Bitdefender. The problem that arises with Fortnite is if I have Bitdefender installed and the launcher doesn’t let me in, I use -http=wininet and I can then access the launcher, but Fortnite won’t/can’t download my profile.
We haven’t heard back from you in a few days, so we are marking this post as Resolved for tracking purposes. If you’re still experiencing this issue, please try the suggestion that I mentioned above then post back here with the requested info.
Evertime I lunch Fortnite it goes in fine then it goes to check for updates then it tells me login when already did and it then says connection to Fortnite sever faild and i cant play
