Hi all,
I’m hoping someone here can help clear up a licensing question that’s turned out to be much more confusing than expected.
We’re an indie studio developing a commercial game in Unreal Engine, with annual turnover over $100k but under $2M. Based on that, I’ve been buying assets from FAB under the Professional tier of the Standard Licence. However, I’ve recently been told that this might not be necessary if the assets are being used exclusively in Unreal Engine.
That raises a few questions I can’t find clear answers to:
- Do we need to buy the Professional tier Standard Licence for assets used solely in Unreal Engine, or is the Personal tier sufficient in that case?
- Some of our assets were acquired through Humble Bundles and redeemed via our FAB account. Is there any way to tell if these are treated as Personal or Professional licences—or does the “UE-only” licence take precedence once they’re redeemed?
- Is there any way to upgrade previously downloaded assets to a Professional licence, if that turns out to be required?
- Can we audit our existing FAB assets to see which licence tier they were acquired under?
I reached out to FAB support, but unfortunately the reply wasn’t helpful:
“Unfortunately, we are not able to provide more specific feedback on this to buyers. If you are unsure of which license you require at the time of the transaction, we recommend reviewing this with your own legal counsel.”
Which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Has anyone else run into this? It feels like I may have been overspending on Professional licences unnecessarily—but I want to be sure we’re fully compliant.
Thanks in advance for any insight!
Drew
