I need help quick. I am preparing to buy a Dell Inspirion 23 5000 series all in one PC. I have checked the specs but I’m not an expert. I just want to make sure this will run UE 4 and that I can further upgrade this PC to help the engine run better in the future. I would appreciate some help before I purchase this PC.
That system seems to depend on integrated intel gpu only. I wouldn’t recommend it.
You haven’t told us the spec of the machine you intend to buy - either way, it’s an ‘all in one’ - it’s using compact hardware, meaning it will be hard to upgrade, and it doesn’t have a proper graphics card, so it isn’t suitable for UE4.
No Dell machines are sold with suitable graphics hardware outside of their extremely expensive Alienware towers. I suggest you look elsewhere, and at gaming orientated towers.
Yeah, the Intel HD gpu will give poor performance. And you likely can’t do much in terms of upgrades, since it’s an all in one system it’s got very specific hardware designs to fit the parts in a small space, you can’t upgrade the graphics card and other parts might not be upgradeable either.
Thanks so much everybody. I am going to wait then. I am just eager to get started with UE 4. Any recommendations on a suitable and upgradable PC without having to custom build one?
Thanks so much everyone. I’ll hold off. Just eager to get going with UE 4. Any suggestions for a suitable and upgradable PC without having to custom build one?
If you want something upgradeable then you need to look into desktop PC’s, like mid-tower size that could actually fit the components. You’ll want one with a dedicated graphics card, ideally something like a GTX 660 or better.
Much appreciation. I’m open to any suggestions on a specific model. I can spend at least 2 grand. Anybody using a rig around that price range to run UE 4?
It’d help if we knew your location, as so we can make a decent suggestion. If you can find a gaming tower running a GTX970, that’s probably the best value for money.
This is a pretty reasonable tower, should last a good few years without needing any major upgrades. I’d prefer an i7 over the i5 it has, but that would cost you a couple of hundred more and this is already up to the task.

If you can, build your computer, it’s much cheaper and it’s a fun project, only takes a couple hours once you’ve got the parts. $2,000 can definitely get you a great system.
Much appreciation everybody. Guess I need to make some decisions. I am in Springfield, Ohio within an hour of Dayton and Columbus if that helps. Cheers!
You’re going to want a good GPU, no less than 8gb of ram (16 recommended, if you’re building a game to push the limits of the engine than 32gb and a 980gtx). CPU I’d recommend an i7 or the best AMD you can buy. And hello fellow Ohioian. I’m in Columbus. Microcenter is a good place to get started if you want to build something custom or even just buy a manufactured PC.
Thanks a lot Foyer. I’ll check out microcenter and your stuff on twitch. Know anything about make human or blender with regards to character creation and animation? They are free but seem pretty robust. I’m also building a space for mo-cap. I know the kinect is far from perfect but I’ve seen some decent stuff without having to spend a ton for better mo-cap.
I wouldn’t buy AMD at all right now. They may be cheap and look like they have good stats (large numbers of cores and high clock speeds), but Intel processors absolutely obliterate them in benchmarks. Current generation quad-core i5s, or better i7s all the way.
I have an i7-4790k - it’s well within your budget (my tower cost £1200), and here’s how it stacks up against common CPUs:
