Comparing RC and Drone Deploy models...

Hello all,

I’ve been using RC for quite a while and love it… I did want to try the DroneDeploy ortho/modeling features as well… so I did the 14 day trial…

I would love to know if there are settings in RC that would provide the kind of model that DD generates… DD is very expensive!

The attached images use the exact same data set of pics… this is for a summer camp in my town… I am creating ortho/contour maps and really want a nice 3d model too…

Some details:
Pics taken from an Autel EVO 2 pro drone, 6k images

413 total shots

387 from a double grid pattern flown from around 130 ft

26 flown from around 70ft with a higher camera tilt to get the side of the buildings shown in the pics…  This helped a lot… Filled in a lot of detail.

This first pic is a screen grab from RC… Looks great… but compare to the one from DD

This is from DD… Notice how the model is so much sharper… the lettering on the buildings are much clearer… It just looks like what you would see from that vantage point…

There are so many settings in RC… I must be missing something… There were no settings in Drone Deploy… that model was produced as seen on the first try…

Thanks for any input!
Harold

Hi,

what settings were you using in RC?

Hi Wallace,

That’s part of the problem… there are so many settings and not much documentation on them… for the alignment, I know I set the overlap to be high… but i pretty much left the defaults… I am on my Linux box at the moment and can’t check all of the settings…

I do remember an old video where it showed how you can lasso closer cameras that would be used for texturing… I can’t find that one now… :(   Is it maybe a problem of lining up the higher altitude pics with the lower more oblique shots?  The lower shots I took helped a lot but gives these kind of lower rez look on RC… But on Drone Deploy were sharp…

Thanks!

Hi,

The viewport in Reality Capture has a limit of one 16k texture. Please try to take a render of that view.

If it still doesn’t look right please check the quality of your texture by clicking on your model, and check the texture is at least 100% (doesn’t need to be more).

If not please unwrap your model using fixed texel size set to optimal:

then re-texture

If you would like to disable the outer cameras for texturing, I would select the inner ones you do want for texturing, then invert the selection and then disable the outer ones for texturing.

but hopefully this will not be necessary after following the previous steps.

I was able to get a little better clearer results by using the higher texture resolution…but still not crystal clear like I saw on DD… So I’ll still play around with the settings some more…
