What does this do for the community? Primarily, we hope to help and encourage the next generation of developers to learn more about game development and the Unreal Engine. Collaborating with others not only helps everyone increase their knowledge, but it also looks good on a resume. Co-development is not a skill that can be learned alone. And a history of volunteering is something a lot of organizations look for. As a result, participation in a larger project can help members of the community stand out as they increase their abilities.
Why are we doing this? We absolutely love that Epic made game development on the Unreal Engine accessible to everyone, and we want to help encourage new developers’ learning of the engine by hosting an Unreal 5 community project. During development, we’ve used other existing community assets along the way, and we would like to help further what has already been done.
Having come from Valve’s Source Engine in 2014, we noticed there seems to be fewer giving back to the Unreal 5 community in comparison to Unreal 4, with the notable exception of teams like Project Borealis, a Half-Life based project. (Comment below if you’re a team that gives to the community. We want to know!) Recognizing this trend, we’ve set out to help by facilitating a game development cooperative consisting of those who share a similar intent.
Learning Unreal isn’t easy. We want to help by making games—together.
Back in 2016, we launched our first build of Cardinal-Menu for Unreal 4, which peaked at ~27,000 downloads. Now at the end of 2025, we hope to do the same—and more—for Unreal 5.
Join us on our journey in game development by visiting the community forums on our website.
How else can you help? If you’d like an easier way to participate, other than lending your time as a developer, you’re welcome to donate to our nonprofit, or you can play the small demo and leave us a review on Epic or Steam. We really appreciate any help we receive.
More about Metahusk: We are a US based 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organized to provide an alternative for creative development through the collaboration of like-minded individuals. We intend to enable one another through the utilization of non-profit structures designed to foster a mutually innovative and creative learning environment.
Our long-term plan is to build dormitory-like facilities where the most promising future game developers can live and develop games together. Donations from the players of the games we create will then be used to fund the future of our organization. It will require raising some capital, but we aim to stay as low budget and self-sustaining as possible. A 21-page working draft of our organizational plan can be found at the bottom of the main page of our website.
If you have any thoughts, questions, or comments, we would love to hear from you below.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us,
-The Metahusk Team
