ColorJump - A platform game

http://bit.ly/1op3kS9

Something I’ve been working on for the last month or so. Trying to learn Blueprints and keep myself busy.

Started with great tutorial Kitatus' Free Books, Projects and Tutorials! - Community & Industry Discussion - Epic Developer Community Forums and took it from there. Thanks, Ryan!

And thanks to community. Tons of great resources to figure out what I’m doing. Keep it up!

Windows build, best played with a 360 controller.

A - Jump
X - Turn Blue
Y - Turn Yellow
B - Turn Red
Right Bumper - Slomo (with powerup)
Left Bumper - Invincibility (with powerup)
Right Trigger - Jump or SuperJump (with powerup)

The object is to collect all coins in the level as fast as possible. Landing on a platform that does not match the color of your robot will end the level. Colored robots will change your color if they touch you so make sure you’re on the same color platform as they are. Big black, smokey robot will kill you if you touch him no matter what color you are. That’s pretty much it.

Completely done in Blueprints with UE4. Assets are taken from what they provide with download (robots were from an unreleased sample game I have access to through work, but it’s in the marketplace as ‘Coming Soon, for free’). Started with tutorials to get some basic understanding and then branched out. Would love to learn how to develop it for mobile, but we’ll see.

Would love to hear any feedback you guys have. I have a lot I still want to do, but I’m taking it slow and making sure I actually understand what I’m doing. Or at least think I do.

P.S. Anyone interested in trying out a build, just shoot me a PM with your email and I’ll share it with you. Best played with Xbox 360 controller, PC only ATM.

Hey man that looks pretty cool! All the sound and animations are coming along great as well!

If you need a beta tester, I can do it no problem, been w while sicne I played a platformer, so it could be fun! and I have a 360 pad as well. PM’ing you now

Looks good, inspiring for those of us looking to make a game with blueprints.

Fun to play, well made, and good looking game!

Ok, sorry for taking so long to give you feedback on , I have been working on my game (or more to the point, stuck on how to make something work in my game), but I have launched and played the game a few times now, so a critique on what I have seen so far.

The game looks and plays great! It has a clean aesthetic feel to it that I really dig. The characters also have great animations and sounds, and the controls are well done as well, making the game feel solid and responsive to play. I was surprised by how fluid it all felt, really well done!

The only crit I have really is the game (at least for me) was really difficult, although could be an actual of the game, so may just be possibly my noobness at the game…:stuck_out_tongue: I made it to level 2 twice, but had a lot trouble seeing which color was coming up next. For example when you jump down off a platform (or jump too high), you can no longer see which color is coming up next below you, and when the pawn is falling, his speed is so fast I couldn’t react fast enough to change the color before hitting the platform below. I would recommend having a camera mode that is zoomed out a little bit, which I know would be difficult as you want to keep your pawn as large as you can to show off all the cool animations and models! I did try playing with a bit in the project side, but I couldn’t come up with an ideal solution. The only other thing I thought might work, is to zoom out slightly, and decrease how high your pawn can jump, which would allow more platforms to be visible on screen as they would need to be re-arranged.

Aside from that, all I can think of is a background image (a dark one to keep the mood the same), and maybe a snazzy menu, but those are more future things that could be polished, the gameplay is already there, so these are not really important.

All in all though, it is a really cool concept, the controls feel great, the graphics and animation are great, and it is definitely fun to play! And I will continue to play it, it’s possible I just really suck at it right now and need some more practice… But great job overall!

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to check it out. So,first off… I can’t take credit for any content in the game. All art, animation and sound is from Epic created projects. I hacked stuff together or poked and prodded things to do what I wanted, but didn’t create any of it from scratch.

That said, the level creation, blueprints and tuning are mine. That’s why you can’t pass level 2. really bad tuning and level design. I wasn’t expecting to have anyone playing it so levels 2-5 are actually the same and I don’t think it’s actually possible to finish it. I’ve fixed that, but now I’m on to trying to do some other gameplay ideas with the same basic setup.

I had similar feedback regarding the camera and falling. I had it set to pull further back when in the air, but obviously not enough. I pulled back even further in later iterations so I think it’s pretty playable now. I may go back and do a quick free ‘beta’ with more thought out level design at some point, but the whole point for me is to learn so I’m on to new stuff at the moment.

Thanks again for taking the time to play and provide feedback. I’ll let you know when I’ve got something new to share.

Hey no problem! It is a fun game to play! I will keep an eye out on DropBox for updated versions, and try to give you feedback on the fly

And I really think once you have a version that plays as close to your intentions, you should post the binaries here to get more of the UE4 community to play it and give you even more feedback!

Looking forward to what you come up with next!
