Color Changes - Existing Cubes

Hello,

I have four separate cubes in my outliner. Each is similar size but slightly different. How can I change the color of each separate ones slightly for contrast? I tried changing it in the Material > Element section and finding the Basic Color change through Command files, but it changes all the cubes the same color.

Hey @BuildMyHouse80 how are you? Welcome to the forums!

To choose a different color for each cube you will need to create new Material Instances for each different color you want.

A Material Instance is a “child” of your original material, not a duplicate, which will inherit all its parameter but will let you change some of them. You want to do it instead of duplicate the material because as it is a child of a parent Material it offers better performance and faster workflow.

Let me show you how to do it step by step:

  1. Here I have some green objects:

  2. All of them have this same material assigned:

  3. You can click here to open the folder where the material is:

  4. Then right click on the material and click on “Create Material Isntance”:

  5. Use the prefix MI to indicate it is a Material Instance and name it as you want:

  6. Now open the new material instance, go to the Details panel, open Surface Properties and enable Base Color:

  7. Click on the color bar and it will allow you to change its color, then save it:

  8. Go back to your level and select all the objects you want to apply this new material:

  9. Then go to the details panel and change the old material for the new material instance you created:

And that’s it! You need to repeat the process for each different color!

Hope this helps you! Let me know if you need more help with this!
