Collision "Expansion" like Pikmin without stacking

I’m doing something similiar to this mechanic in Pikmin: Pikmin 1 Full Playthrough - YouTube

Notice that when Olimar throws pikmins on the exact same spot, they kinda expand to the side to give space to thrown ones, preventing them to be stacked on top of each other.

Is there a way to achieve this effect? Maximum I could get is setting their collision to overlap, but they would get stacked on each other. Turning collision to block again after they landed doens’t "update’ the collision also.
