Unless im missing something there is no way of expanding the code field of the Custom node in the material editor.
How am I supposed to code?

We are currently working on adding a multi-line editor for the custom node, but there is currently not a way to do the editing in the material editor itself. You can type out the HLSL code in Notepad and copy and paste it into the single line slot and it should work. There is a performance hit on using the Custom node as the Material cannot be optimized in the engine and it is assumed that in using it the code is correct as written.
