Hello, I’m sorry if this question has already been answered, but I can’t find the information I need. I’m interested in the demo City Semple. is this demo subject to the same license agreements as the entire unrial engine? since this demo is free and uses objects and materials that are also in the public domain, Can I make linear content based on this demo (small footage) to sell them on marketplaces like shutterstock. As I understand it, if I separately collect objects (parts of this demo that are freely available) and render a video from them, then the license allows me to distribute linear content, including for a fee. But what if I render a video based on this demo? Will I be considered the author of such a video? because I set the camera, the light, the angle and set the movement and so on
please help me understand
Hey there @rulitdirt! Welcome to the community! As long as you aren’t distributing any of the source assets, you’re good to film and commercially sell that footage with any of the samples/example content. For your specific use case, you don’t even owe royalties like games do after a certain amount.
Now the marketplace rules on this are a slightly different. You cannot sell any content sample or otherwise on the marketplace that you received from Epic or any other marketplace vendor. This is to combat stealing of paid assets and all other nastiness.
To keep it short, yes you would be the author of your content, as long as you follow the EULA laid out. I recommend getting some snacks together and sit down and read through this EULA for all important terms because there are far more than I went over here:
thank you very much for the answer, I understood correctly, I have every right to shoot a video in this demo and share it even for a fee, for example, on marketplaces like shutterstock. But I have no right to share the source code and parts of the program itself. Right ?
I realized that the City Sample Demo refers to free samples and I can fully use it to create my own videos and further use them on marketplaces. Right ?
No worries! You’ve got it right, as long it’s not sold on the UE marketplace (because it’s a free asset there) you’re good. Involve no source and follow the rest of the EULA and you can sell it on other marketplaces perfectly fine.
thank you very much for the your answer. This demo has a lot of potential! I have already seen many videos made in this demo on marketplaces from other users like this one https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/item/206819373-fast-data-transfer-optical-rays-passing-through-busy-downtow , but I decided to play it safe and find out if it is legal to sell videos. You answered my question, thank you! This demo will give me a good start to get started with Unreal Engine
