Hello everyone!
I am quite new to Unreal Engine for Cinematics and I had a question for you all.
Right now our current pipeline is Maya for character setup / animation then via alembic we send it to Houdini for CFX and rendering.
We’re looking into the feasibility of Unreal Engine to speed up our workflow (Waiting on slow renders for feedback is a pain!).
I would like to know people’s opinions on what the best practice for a character pipeline is.
What is the best workflow for this? Alembic? FBX? USD?
I did some research and found that Unreal Engine does not support things like Dual-Quaternion skinning and Delta Mush which makes sense since its a game engine, but its a technology that we heavily use. FBX would not carry this data, but alembic could.
If we use alembic though we don’t have a skeleton for things like parenting effects or I’m sure a bunch of other things but then we’re limited to linear skinning with no delta mush ect.
What is the industry standard, what are you guys using, please - I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you
