Character walks (animation) in air

For whatever stupid reason I managed to animate my character’s walking cycle like maybe five inches above the ground. I didn’t think it would matter at the time. I guess I supposed that UE4 would take care of that automatically with gravity. The gravity works fine but my character still walks in the air. I’ve tried fixing it in UE4 rather than remaking the animation (took hours to make it look near perfect).

It’s seemingly possible to move the mesh inside the animation editor. Only it doesn’t save, it goes back to “floating” again each time I save and open the animation again. I tried to lower the mesh inside the skeletal mesh editor, same behavior there. Is it even remotely possible to move a mesh inside an animation, or do I really have to redo the animation and import it into UE4 again?

Maybe you should try to lower it in viewport instead.
Wish you good luck.

You should be able to use UE4 to offset it, basically key a new position and save that. I really never use this feature, only tested out saving an adjusted animation once before, which worked fine, so not sure why it’s not working for you. I guess research it a little to find where you’re going wrong with it.

Anyway, depending on what software you use and how the thing is rigged, I think all packages will allow you to adjust your whole character position without having to remake the animation. I know Max the best and in there it’s super easy to do, I’m sure in Maya it will also be and not sure about Blender but I don’t see why not. The idea there would be to have a main parent node that is not animated, everything else is animated above that, then move that parent down so the feet are on the ground. Then just export. Max will bake the animation correctly, I’m sure Maya will too, but again, not sure about Blender. But that’s the base idea kind of regardless of rig, in some way. In Max if you used Biped, there may be a slightly different work flow to achieve it, or the same, depending how it was animated, but even then, still easy to do.
