Change character mesh and skeleton priority

Hi there

I’m developing an indie game and I’ve created a character for this but now that I’m in the middle of designing and creating game mechanics I find out I need to change my character mesh and skeleton a little because of some issues within poses. So I’m worried if I fix this I will fall into this situation again and I want to check with you guys if should I postpone character editing to the end of process or it would be hard to change it later? In other words is it crucial to finalize my character as my first priority?
I’m using Maya for animation and changing topology and rig is a time consuming process and I’m afraid if I could not use my previous animations that I saved on control curves after editing the rig.
