Chances of Google Project Tango support?

What are the chances of UE4 supporting import of 3d environments mapped by Googles Project Tango devices? https://www.google.com/atap/projecttango ? Is there something already being worked on or something in the backlog to research it?

I could imagine this could be great for quickly importing and creating environments with UE4 that you could later play in VR for example!

There’s mention in this article: http://enewsletters.constructionexec.com/techtrends/2014/03/googles-project-tango-3-d-smartphone-captures-building-information/ of Unity game engine support:

But I guess that’s also just a possibility idea at this stage …

We’re indeed working with Project Tango on support for UE4! There’s a demo of the engine running on their latest device on the showfloor at Google IO, and we hope to continue improving our integration with the engine moving forward!

Is it actually useful for what people seem to want (scanning in a room and pulling it directly in game)? I’ve seen some of the pictures of the data from Project Tango and it looks really noisy. At that point, it seems like you’d need to re-model most of the mesh anyway?

That said, it looks like it will have real potential in the future when the data is a bit cleaner coming in, so that it doesn’t just require remodeling everything anyway.

We haven’t done much with the dense mapping functionality of the Tango yet, as we’ve been focused on the odometry functionality (orientation and position mapping in a space) for the demo. We think there’s some interesting applications there with the editor, capturing motion directly into the world for camera tracks, etc. Very interested to play around with the dense mapping though, because the potential there is huge!

Great to hear! Thanks for replying with the latest info Nick

I think for now Tango is going to be really great as an untethered positional tracker, for use with VR devices… Playing e.g., Skyrim while in a football field by walking around would be great (like the RedRovr demo, but with better tracking/less problems!)

that’s interesting.
I saw a closed card on trello

“Integrate Project Tango with the engine, and work with the Google team for possible editor extensions.”

why it was archived?
did epic stop working on that?

Hey, are there any new infos about ue4 and project tango?
I am very interested in real time position tracking in combination with mobile vr/cardboard.
I would be glad for any infos or links for this topic.

Any updates on this at all? I got in touch with Google and they pretty much just told me they wont do anything and told me to go to Unity instead…

Sorry to bump this thread, but was wondering the same thing as ZoltanJr. I pestered google peeps and they asked me to go to Unity. Is this going to be the case?

Bumping with the answer

Opaque has released a (beta) plugin for supporting Project Tango:
http://www.opaque.media/project-tango-plugin

Licensed under Apache 2.0. Hope this helps!

Can’t wait to get home & test the Opaque plugin tonight!

I am gonna have to be a necromancer today and ask if there has been any new development on this front.

Unfortunately Opaque plugin is abandoned, plus there was never any tutorials about how to use it  (for example, I want to scan my room, save it and then have AI navigating around - how on Earth would I do that?!)
