I’m new to UE4. And i’m trying to build a RTS type game. Sofar i’ve figured out how to do the building placement, but i’m getting stuck on moving my units.
I’ve set op a NavMesh (its showing the green surface), but i cant figure out how to get my unit moving.
I’m just looking for the most basic example on how to move stuff. Preferably through SimpleMoveTo. I’d like the unit i spawned in to walk to a location at BeginPlay. No matter what I do my unit wont move. I tried out all the different actors , added movement components, but nothing happens.
When i used one of the templates , i was having no issues with this at all, but starting from scratch i seem to be forgetting something.
What are the minimum requirements for a Character to move from point A to B?
Learn the basics first, why follow a tutorial that you do not understand at all… maybe it is not even a good tutorial at all, but you just don´t know.
Never over complicate your blueprints, in the long run, this will affect your FPS, some tutorials add extra stuff to each little thing, because they try to be as complete as possible for their audience, but, you do not need to follow every little step
If this is already a project that you want to make slowly while learning, stop, think first about your concept, your gameplay, write it on paper, once you feel your ideas are cohesive and great, then start working in UE, if not you will only loose time on something you might not like latter, pre production is always first.
Making a game takes time… work fast but relaxed, do not stress yourself.
Do not release games on Steam, their market is mostly countries dedicated to piracy, like Russia and China, your game WILL be released on hundreds of piracy sites just 1 hour after the official release and you will sell little to nothing, even massive companies have troubles selling their games on Steam, making 50% OFF sales all the time and lowering their price from $80 to $8 in less than a year… make a quality game, and bet for Epic or Microsoft, then move on to PS and Switch.
It has to be fun or interesting, if not, why playing it?
People love Cinematics these days… work the sequencer.
Make it your own… do not copy others, hundreds of games are released every day, is your idea special?
Why no one told me this?
The more you work in UE the better you become, and the less tutorials you need = you become more creative and more aware of what you can and can’t do, this is really a hard lesson, because sometimes your ideas are cool, but you cant figure out how to make it happen, or they require complex systems and if they fail… bugs can take long to fix, and even if it works, it can also fail after packaging the project.
It´s all about the looks… believe it, if it looks like a mess no one will buy it, learn to make your own stuff, make your own meshes, textures, you won’t find it easy to customize others assets to make a cohesive looking concept.
If your game is great… It will sale, even if it doesn’t at first because of the lack of media or budget, when you release it, keep going, make your second game.
If you fail with your first sales, you can still get a cool job in 4 years with 4 years of experience, UE is brand new per free, no one is really an expert with more than 8 years of experience.
If you don’t have the time to dedicate, don’t even try, there is people making games since 15 years, never released 1; making a game takes a long time, but you can still make small games, just be strategic.
