I’m making a simple retro game and I’ve worked on it on 1280x960 in the engine. But when I package it it always opens fullscreen stretched (I have a wide monitor 2560x1080). Now I have tried putting a set resolution in blueprints on my Event BeginPlay in my MapMainMenu Level Blueprint as I saw in one of the Unreal forums, repackaged and nothing. I also tried creating DefaultGameUserSettings.ini in the Config folder of my project files and setting the resolution from there - still nothing. I’ve tried both at the same time, clean recooking, repackaging, deleting Intermediate, Saved, Build folders and redoing everything but to no success. I’ve run out of ideas so I’d love some help. That’s all that’s left for my game so I’m excited to have it finished! Thanks in advance!
I use Unreal Engine 5.6.1
I think you need ‘windowed’ rather than ‘windowed fullscreen’? ( from what I can recall right now )
I just changed it in Blueprints and its all good! Thank you so much and for the swift response!
BeginPlay on the map blueprint is the wrong place for this. GameUserSettings is already loaded by then, and a Set Resolution node there fights the window the engine already created, which is why DefaultGameUserSettings.ini also looks like it did nothing. The packaged build is reading the player’s saved settings (or the fullscreen default), not the ini you edited, unless you also delete the Saved/Config folder of the packaged game.
Do this instead, in the project settings, not the level blueprint. In Project Settings, go to Engine > General Settings, and set the Default Window Width and Default Window Height to 1280 and 960. Set the Default Window Mode to Windowed. Then in the same page, turn off Stretch to Fill so a 16:9 monitor does not squash the 4:3 frame.
If the game still opens fullscreen, the player already has a saved GameUserSettings. On the packaged build, delete the Saved/Config folder under the game’s install directory (or the user’s AppData copy of the project name) and launch again. You can also force it from the command line with -windowed -resx=1280 -resy=960 to confirm the setting works before you rely on the ini.
Also check that the map you are opening on BeginPlay is not a different level that sets fullscreen in its own blueprint. SetResolution only affects the window after the level loads, so if the main menu map blueprint later calls Set Window Mode to Fullscreen, you will see exactly this. Search the project for Set Window Mode and Set Resolution and make sure only the settings page is setting them, once, and only if the player has not already chosen a mode.
