Can't load Unreal VS Extension?

Hey everyone,
I’m very very new to developing games and am still reading all the tutorials.
I reached the tutorial about writing basic C++ code and went to open a new project. However a message came up saying “No compiler was found. In order to use a C++ template, you must first install Visual Studio 2013” with a button saying “Install Visual Studio 13”. However, when I click the button, a window pops up saying “starting installation” and then it disappears and nothing happens. The program doesn’t load and I still can’t open the C++ code project.

I tried to look into it further and find an alternate place to download it on the web, and it would seem it is a program that you have to pay for. This didn’t seem right to me since Unreal Engine is free, so I looked some more. I found a page that says you can execute the installation by double clicking the UnrealVS.vsix file on my computer. I did this and my computer doesn’t recognize it so it does nothing.

Can someone please clear up what I’m supposed to do? In order to learn how to make a game am I going to need to buy the VS software? Does Unreal offer a way to write C++ code for free? If so, how do I open a C++ project? Or does Unreal offer a way to make a complete (and good) game with no C++ code?

Please forgive me if I’m being basic but I really am new to all this. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Thanks!

I installed Visual Studio Community but I’m getting the same error message. Please, any help on the matter is greatly appreciated

Hi ,

Installing Visual Studio Community should have fixed this issue, I would have thought.

When you say that you’re getting the same error message, could you clarify the steps you’re now performing having first installed Visual Studio Community?

Thanks for responding. I installed Visual Studio Community directly from their website, restarted my computer, verified the version of unreal in the library tab then tried to open a C++ project template. Got the same “No compiler was found. In order to use a C++ template, you must first install Visual Studio 2013”.
I have no idea what’s going wrong. You wouldn’t think it would be such a problem lol.

I’m not too sure on this one, but maybe it was from installing UE4 before installing Visual Studio? I would recommend trying to reinstall UE4, although that would lead to another download of the engine most likely :frowning:

When you installed Visual Studio Community, were there language options? Some installs of it let you select which you’d like installed/enabled.

I just installed the Windows Desktop version at this link: Download Visual Studio Tools - Install Free for Windows, Mac, Linux verfied Unreal Engine again and the problem appears to have been fixed. Bizarre! Thank you for giving me your time

Ah no worries! Good luck with your C++.
