Cant get metallic to look good

hi, I cant seen to make the metallic look good, it always looks off for some reason, it looks really good in substance printer and i have played around with the maps in photoshop and tried a few different things in the Matt editor but it just doesn’t look any good, i have tried not tricking the RGB on the texture window and playing around buy still no good,

any tips

Note on the upside I don’t seem to have this problem in ue5 access build, but I have to research the lighting as its got very bad shadows lol

If it’s reflective, then it’s because of the engine Reflections (or lack thereof)

Ue4 isn’t terribly good at PBR metals unless you manually output something as the reflection.
On game scenes it will almost always look cartoon like. Plus you have temporal AA getting in the way too.
And screen space Reflections possibly. If it’s not on screen, it’s not reflected.

Check out the free car materials set. See if the material in there is more metallic / what it does to render that way. And what project settings are generated when you open that project…

If you have enough fps try to bump up the reflection captures a bit.

To use a custom cube map you would use the reflection vector node into the cubemap texture and output as emissive.
It may be easier to use a custom cube map in the level instead of mixing it to the material manually. But if you want to sort of combine reflection captures with a custom map so the metal is never just black, this would be the way.

You could possibly try to enable high precision tangent basis on the mesh.
(In each lod).
There’s also high precision normals in project settings.
[Both these last 2 affect performance a lot].

Thanks for the info mate, i will look into it

You definitely need a reflection capture…

I have played around with a few capture components, there’s rally not much difference unless I’m being overly picky, but it still looks off compared to substance engine your right the engine dose struggle a metallic matt, i think one problem is, i have a reflective metal, a glossy paint, a dusty plastic, and a rust all on a few maps, I get the paint layer to look good and the metal looks overly glossy and very bright, and same goes the other way. i am half thinking of ditching the AO map witch I never use and crating a second map metallic map just for the metal layer
