Can't even complete the initial install

So I have been trying for the past 3 days to install unreal engine on my 2023 mac mini running OS 15.4.1. Each time I have the same issue. At roughly 75% (not always this but mostly around here), everything comes to a total standstill. Download and disk write sit at 0mb and do nothing for hours. I try restarting the launcher and this puts the download back into initialising and won’t come out of that. The launcher itself has a resume button but the download list says initialising. I can’t now cancel this download and its stuck there. I have to manually delete all files on my mac related to UE and eventually it clicks and allows me to stop and try again. I have tried three fresh installs of the launcher and had no success. I have checked all my permissions are correct and I have Xcode installed and have agreed to the license. I have tried multiple installation locations with plenty of room on them. Anyone have any idea why I can’t seem to install?

Welcome to the forums!

This is going to be a bit of a non answer but I’ll summarise what I’ve seen on the forums regarding this issue over the years:

  • The most common solution seems to be just leave it alone for a long time, it could simply be processing a very large file (same thing can happen the first time you launch the engine). Towards the end of the installation especially there are some very large files being installed (progress is not amount of data, it is amount of complete files, so large files may be downloaded but install is happening and it appears stalled).
  • You need about double the size of the installation available on your hard drive for pagefile usage during installation! (although you should be getting warnings if you are out of space)
  • Antivirus/Firewall preventing specific files downloading.

So not an answer as such just a collection of other people’s solutions. Of course the majority of these are on windows machines (couldn’t say for sure what the percentage of pc to mac is but I imagine it would be huge) so maybe there is a specific mac issue, but I haven’t personally come across any other people asking about it lately so it seems unlikely to be an Epic Launcher/Unreal Engine side issue.

Update the thread if one of those things was the issue, or if you discover the issue being something different just for future issues that may crop up.
