I have created an anim montage to test the transition between two animations. Now I’d like to get rid of it, but the editor always warns that the montage is in use somewhere (which it isn’t) and doesn’t delete, although I’m using “Force Delete”. Restarting the editor won’t help.
Error message:
AnimMontage /Game/Characters/BasicCharacter/NewAnimMontage.NewAnimMontage is in use.
---
Running the editor with '-NoLoadStartupPackages' may help if the object is loaded at startup.

Please try creating a new blank montage and call it something simple like “Test.” Then delete your “NewAnimMontage” and when the warning pops up, replace the “NewAnimMontage” with the “Test” montage. Then delete the “Test” montage. Let me know if this works…
thanks for the answer. However, this doesn’t work for me - I only can “Force Delete” the asset (which throws the error), not replace it (see screenshot).
With the Engine closed you can physically delete the file from the project folder or move all the other files to a new folder and then delete the entire old folder from the project directory as shown here (Typically located in the Unreal Projects folder located in your “My Documents” folder.) *Keep the file in the trash as this may cause a fatal error that will require you to return it. If your project opens without it -even if given an error- then it will be safe to empty the trash:
