Can't assign materials to layers.

Alright, so, I just can’t understand what I’m doing here. I was about to add materials to my world but I can’t assign the targeted materials for some reason? What gives?

Highly recommend reading what the editor has for you there, it tells you generally what the issue is. for landscape painting you need to create a material that you can paint on the landscape, do you have one?

I tried to make one. I assigned the materials accordingly. Base colour, roughness, ambient occlusion, normal, etc. Saved it and somehow the editor doesn’t pick it up in the landscape paint mode. This is completely unprecedented and I’m absolutely new to this program.

…even though I take it as a more complex version of photoshop, or Gimp, since they use layers. This is version 5.6 btw.

Now before someone lobs a tutorial at me. Please note that the tutorials don’t work for everyone, since features may have been hidden or have been depreciated by something new. I’ve learned that the hard way.

First your correct, depending on the feature tutorials don’t help. In your case your on the latest version so your at the mercy of figuring some stuff out on your own. (I did this for one of my VR projects, I gave up on it since i knew nothing about vr and swapped to something else)

What do you have for your material instance?

Heres what i would recommend if your painting your landscape go to “mesh paint mode” and then select your landscape, then thats where you paint your landscape. lemme know if that helps.

Alright, I’ll let you know if it works out or not. Thank you.

Yeah no, it doesn’t help. Sorry.

To clarify, I created my materials and when I wanted to assign them to targeted layers, the button was greyed out, stating that all the material layers were created, but there’s nothing. No layers or anything of the sort. The landscape didn’t even turn to black either. Again, this is in the landscape paint mode.

I did enable edit layers on my landscape…Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

For my materials, I have snow, rock, grass, and two types of sand connected in the make material attributes function, with their maps connected accordingly. The yellow, or green ones connected to the ambient occlusion, roughness and displacement inputs while the blue ones are connected to the normal input, all of them feeding into a landscape layer blend, and the preview ball is pitch black with no reflection.

Can’t tell if you set up your material incorrectly. Maybe send a screenshot of your build. The auto-layer creation tool can sometimes be a bit buggy, so I usually create my layers by hand.

You can use the plus icon “Create Layer” to add a new layer, then rename it to match the name you used in the material editor. After that, you’ll see another plus icon “Create Layer Info”, which you also need to create (this stores the painting data.

A)t this point, it should work, as long as your setup is correct.

You got this :flexed_biceps:

Alright, here’s a screenshot of my materials setup.

Hope it helps.

I just don’t know what could be causing this, like, at all. Almost as if this problem is a one of a kind.

Alright, so I’ve created a new landscape with edit layers enabled and the engine still tells me that all targeted materials have been assigned to layers in the landscape paint mode but there’s literally nothing. No materials or anything.

Yeah, landscape mode’s paint thing is broken…how did the devs overlook this? They really lobbed a boulder at us and said “do it one by one.”

Seems like there are a lot of textures. Try setting the sampler source of all your textures to ‘Shared: Wrap’, and also try what I mentioned before if you haven’t already.

How do I do that?

Hell, where would I even find the settings for that? I swear Unreal Engine is just one giant labyrinth that constantly changes about when you least expect it.

Yeah I don’t know how to do that. I’ve never dived that deep. Again, I’m COMPLETELY new to this whole thing.

When you click on a Texture Sample, in the Details panel on the left, you’ll find a parameter called ‘Sampler Source’. By default, it’s set to ‘From Texture Asset’ — change it to ‘Shared: Wrap’.

Also, try starting with only two layers; it’ll be much easier to grasp the basics of landscape material layering, and you can add more once you’ve got the hang of it.

And again, try to set up your layers manually as I mentioned above.

So, basically just create each layer of the material separately instead of using a layer blend and then using the plus icon to set them up from there?

I’m basically going to need a full explanation as to what I need to do here, please. These fragmented instructions with little to no screenshots are kind of confusing, difficult to keep track of.
