Cannot align Laser with Photos

Hi,

I’m trying to align laser data and photos. I’ve imported the laser data (E57 ordered, from Kaarta Contour scanner that uses SLAM), after clicking “Align Images”, I’m getting only 5/5 cams. Then I’ve added 87 photos of the same space, and tried automated alignment… it cannot align. Any ideas why? Thanks:)

Hi Eytan,

it is possible, that there is not enough overlap between the data sets. What can help here, is using the control points.

Also, this could be helpful for you: https://support.capturingreality.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013354939-How-to-merge-drone-images-with-terrestrial-laser-scans-

Also, there could be a problem with the laser scanner, as RealityCapture supports ordered point clouds from terrestrial laser scanners, where you need to have laser scan’s positions. From handheld scanners you don’t have these. There is a workaround for this type of laser scanners: https://support.capturingreality.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020653080-How-to-import-any-scan-data-to-RealityCapture-using-CloudCompare-and-Faro-Scene-How-to-create-ordered-point-cloud-from-unordered-

Thanks, Ondrej. I’m able to import the scan but cannot see enough points to precisely manually align. Is then a way to show more points from the point cloud?

Thanks!

This is a result of the used laser scanner. As I wrote, RealityCapture doesn’t support handheld scanners (there is a feature request for it). In this case you need to create some fake laser scan positions as it is described in second attached link in my previous message.
