Can we use star wars characters names in our audio lines for our star wars island?

We want to have audio lines where it says a star wars character(their name) has joined the battle, but we aren’t 100% sure if that would be against brand rules.

Hello,

It’s a good question, but I’d be surprised if you got a definitive response here.

There’s bullet point in the Thumbnails section that states:

you can " Use “Star Wars ” and the names of locations and characters from the Star Wars universe in the title of your Star Wars Island"

So it’s not quite the same as a voice recording using their name - but I’d say it’s a point in your favor.

One “test” I do for things like this would be to ask myself if a reasonable person would restrict it. Recording names of provided characters seems completely reasonable. - I think you start to get into a restricted area if you emulate Star Wars characters that are not included.

hi @LosesoIcanwin

There are strict guidelines in place to protect you and Epic for Violations

Audio in UEFN (Creator Rules)

  • Ownership: You must own the copyright to any audio files imported into UEFN.

  • Content Restrictions: All audio, including sound effects and music, must adhere to the ESRB rating of the island (e.g., Teen-rated islands cannot have explicit lyrics or violent content).

  • Import Limits: Audio files can be imported up to 300 seconds (5 minutes) long.

  • Forbidden Audio: Real-life audio recordings of people are prohibited on islands

So NO

Its all listed in

Fortnite Developer Rules - Epic Games

Hi Jimbo,

I see in rule 1.2 " Do not include videos or photographs of real-life people (yourself or others) anywhere in your island…" but I don’t think that applies to audio.

I’ve seen islands with voice-overs + narration.

Just not Star Wars

Star Wars character names are heavily protected, primarily through trademark law rather than copyright. Lucasfilm Ltd. (a Disney subsidiary) has registered trademarks for names like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, and others across various products. Using these names for commercial products can cause consumer confusion and lead to legal action.

Wish could find the YouTube video for

Darth Vader saying “You don’t want to feel the power of Lucas Film Dark side. Do not test my patience on Copyright”.

Extremely funny way of protecting Star Wars Intellectual Property!. :black_circle::robot::crossed_swords: (official)

I understand this for general stuff like Non-Star Wars islands, but we have access to the characters in star wars islands now. You can have their name in text, show them and their model through a character device, we have access to using images of them(their fortnite counterpart), and we can have their names in the title of our map, but having their name in audio crosses the line? It is our voice saying their names and we are only using the names of the characters that are provided to us. That’s why it’s a little confusing to me because I feel if we couldn’t use their names in audio, we’d be more limited with using them in general.
