Can’t play anymore video games because of expensive GPU’s

Hi to everyone. I like to start e topic about the biggest problem players are experiencing in this difficult times: the price of GPU’s. We have the possibility to buy many games but it’s useless because we can’t play them. Why ? Because we don’t have the possibility to buy even a mediocre GPU. As we all know if you don’t have a gpu with at least 4gb ram you can’t play any decent game. 3 years ago in 2019 a gpu with 4 gb ram had a price 120 € but now it costs 450 € ! A lot of gamers has stoped playing video games because they can’t update their gpu. What do you think about this big problem ? Do you have any idea how to resolve this issue and if a big company like Epic Games can build a system to help players finding a decent gpu with a reasonable price ?

Thanks to the crypto currency bandwagon and the world shortage of chips because the world shut down its not likely to get better anytime soon… In fact the demand is still ever growing and they just aren’t churning them out fast enough. Sony can barely make PS5s because of it…

I don’t think it’s a big problem - it sounds like a you problem to me. Good visuals do not make for a good game, objectively. Plenty of examples around (cough, recentbattlefield, cough). And plenty of fantastic games that run on potato hardware. There are also older games.

A lot of gamers has stoped playing video games because they can’t update their gpu.

And your source is? Not according to Steam consistently peaking, they did not ;p There’s more people playing games than ever before.

Now, I have absolutely no right telling you what to like. If you want to play flashy games (because there are great games out there that do have it all, bells & whistles), you need a beefy GPU, that’s true. Scalping does not help. If you want new, potent hardware manufactured for cheap, then no, we can’t have such nice things.

If you look around, you can get a used 6GB 1060 for around €120-130, or thereabout. It’s not cutting edge, sure but if you lower you standards (of visuals), it’s a pretty decent GPU.

It is not a big problem, there are so many games that are indie, have great gameplay and low/mid demands from PC. I have around 100 indie (or not AAAAAAAAAAA) games that i want to at least try for few hours, but no time.

You know solution is simple. You do not have decent GPU because you are unwilling or cannot pay for it (yes prices are inflated), so save up, or go earn some extra cash. While playing less or not playing you should have more free time, so do 2-3 weeks of any decent work and you should get that extra $$$ to pay scalpers tribute in inflated prices.

Nope, they just bought console, or still play on lastgen. Most of my friends do not upgrade their PCs for over 10 years, because PC and gaming is not their priority. And that is big problem on every LAN party, there is always somebody with 12+ years old toaster complaining he cannot play even oldies like left 4 dead. Those ppl are players (when have time) they just do not see appeal of new flashy and bad AAA games.

So if you stopped gaming because you cannot run latest cod or battlefield, i would say good for you. Go study something that will raise your income in future, or do some work, or just go outside.

Tim is not next Jesus, and its not Epic`s responsibility to deliver hardware to players.
Just wait until next xmass season, it should be better by then.

PS.
And do not buy GPU below point of diminishing returns, always get one with best FPS to price ratio.

Really 120 $ gtx 1060 !? You mean this, used on Amazon…

If these were my google-shopping skills, I’d complain, too.

And eBay is not even the cheapest market out there… And if you keep scrolling (or filter properly) you might be able to get one below £100. You may need to bid cleverly and exercise patience.

Buying a cheap 3060/3070/3080 - not so much, though.

Thanks but I had before two scums with used ebay products. Payed and products never sent. I had to make a lot of hard discussions with Paypal to retake my money back after months. For this reason I go for safe sites.

There are things you can do to mitigate risks:

See what they’ve been selling.

Why did you choose the most expensive unit on Amazon to present your case :expressionless:

Good work mate !

Another thing worth looking into. Some reputable computer hardware stores will sell refurbished GPUs. They will be usually a 1/3 below the RRP and come with a 1 year warranty. Not as cheap as a second hand unit from a private seller but overall somewhat reasonable.

It might be worth looking at the less popular cards that were not the absolute bestsellers. For example, the humble GeForce 1650. It’s a wee bit slower than the 1060 and has only 4GB but you will be able to play majority of games at 60fps at medium 1080p settings. A brand new one should be around £200.

Not cutting edge by any means but quite capable. Unlikely to run Crysis 4 well, though.

Have a look at Steam survey to see what people actually own and what the developers are likely to target:

But, overall, it’s a bad time to buy a GPU :expressionless:

a 1060 will run pretty much any new AAA game on med-hi settings.

Especially once you read up about to how to configure graphical settings for that specific game. There are some features that kill framerate in certain titles but are virtually unnoticeable when turned down / disabled. Choosing a Medium preset is not always the best ideas. You could opt for a combination of low-med-high and get superior results.

Borderlands 3 had killer fog that contributed f**k all to overall appeal. And running CP2077 with Psycho settings is not a good idea either. Pick your battles.

Lol, I am stuck with a gtx 650 ti, because I decided to wait for RTX 3000 to upgrade my PC and suddenly prices went to sky. On the bright side, since I can’t do a lot with graphics because potato GPU, I am learning a lot of C++.

I think this is great news! Video games are very unhealthy and to stop play them, means gamers might have more time to grow up, stop being lazy and do something with their lives instead of using video games like drugs.

Take it back! Oh, wait. :no_mouth:

Taking everything back. Last reply here, just cleaning up this profile before I delete the account.

Perhaps there’s hope. Things are calming down.

A market where someone on a tight budget has an actual need to search ebay for used gpus from 2 generations ago is not a healthy one. When the market for GPUs weren’t this insane each generation represented a jump in price:performance compared to what came before. What we should all want, is for the humble mid range gpu of the current generation to be within reach of as many people as possible.

Also, eventually those old gpus are going to die. Those of you using hand me downs better hope they get the RRP under control, and can actually sell you a new card for that price.

Aye, but soon the new GPUs will be replaced with even newer GPUs! Current new shall become the future’s last gen.

One day, around Anno Covid Domini 2027 you’ll acquire a slightly crypto-burnt mining 3090ti for a smidgeon under its MSRP. It would still run the now venerable UE5’s indy games well.

There is hope. :expressionless:

Buy a pre-made IMHO. The premade companies get their cards in bulk. Dell, Alienware, CLX, Cyberpower, etc.

Here is a Core I5, GForce 2060, and an SSD for $1100 bucks. Seems somewhat reasonable.

Instant Ship Systems (cyberpowerpc.com)

I find it hard to believe anyone would actually buy a used GTX 1060 for 450 pounds.

Man, that premade PC is even more expensive. CPU is about 160$, 8GB DDR4 is about 40$, SSD 500GB M2 about 60$, lets say 100$ motherboard and 50$ power supply.
160 + 40 + 60 + 100 + 50 = 410$, the price listed is $1149, so we have 739$ for mice, case, keyboard and GPU. Really, with 740$ you can go for new RTX3060 (560$-600$) or used RTX3070 instead that 2060 in the premade PC.
