I am a Phd student in computer science, and MetaHuman is just the tool I need for my reaserach in Computer Vision.
What I am planning to do include:
1.Using Metahuman to synthesize face images for training neural networks for detection purposes, such as head pose detection, without incorporating any generative functionalities.
2.Only releasing the synthesized image dataset, without publishing any UE-related projects, code, or resources.
3.Limiting the use strictly to fully open academic purposes.
The Metahuman Creator EULA says that you cannot (j) use the MetaHuman Technology for the purpose of building or enhancing any database or training or testing any artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, neural network or similar technology;
While the Unreal Engine EULA also says Epic Games permits users to utilize Unreal Engine 5 at no cost for educational purposes as well as nonprofit development projects.
So is my plan allowed or not? I am kind of confused.
Hi, i am also doing something similar. From my understanding this is about the Metahuman Technology. If you go to the Definitions section the Metahuman Technology does not include the downloaded characters which based on the EULA are bounded by the UE Content EULA. This EULA also states that you cannot modify the technology but in fact you can modify the downloaded characters with an external tool like blender. In the UE Content EULA in the MetaHuman Content Addendum section there is no such restriction for the downloaded characters. There was sometime before (“d. use MetaHuman Content for the training or testing of any artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, neural network or similar technology.”) but they removed it when the noAI tag was introduced (see https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/eula-change-log/content). In this EULA its also stated that you own all the rights for renders (images) that depict metahumans. The only restriction is that the images should be rendered inside Unreal Engine. If you search scholar you will find papers/datasets with Metahumans which is confusing. I guess this snipet is to protect from anyone who will try to mine assets or any other part of the technology and build/train an AI to generate new 3D characters, thus creating a tool/technology that will be a direct competitor with MHC.
