I’m currently working on a game , and the tentative title for the game is “Unreal Boxing”. The idea behind the name is to emphasize that this is not a realistic boxing simulation but more of an arcade-style experience, with exaggerated movements and reactions, prioritizing fun over realism.
However, I understand that “Unreal” is a trademark owned by Epic Games and is closely associated with their engine and products. My questions are:
Is it legally safe to use “Unreal” in my game title?
If not, is there a way to request permission or authorization from Epic Games to use it?
Any email where i can ask those things?
I want to ensure I won’t face legal issues in the future while also exploring the possibility of keeping the name.
I would heartily suggest just… figuring out a different adjective to use in your title. They do own the trademark to it, but not only that. It could be quite easily interpreted as an attempt to mislead people to thinking it’s associated with Epic developers. To avoid potential legal issues sounds a lot safer and less of a headache at the very least.
If you REALLY wanted a trademark permission, I’d find a way to contact someone in marketing. Though, it’s going to be really expensive, even IF they decide to sell you one.
