Sorry if this has already been asked somewhere but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Anyway, simply am I allowed to use free unreal assets when creating scenes for my portfolio? I know we can use them in commercial products and games but isn’t a portfolio supposed to use things created by you and highlight your skills by using those things. I can understand why it would look better to use assets you’ve made yourself but what if you were building a level designer portfolio where in the workplace you would be given the needed assets.
Guess it wasn’t as simple as i though. Anyway, what’s the right thing to do?
I believe you can, as long as the scene in your portfolio is made with UE4. I believe you would not be allowed to take the assets out of UE4 and pre-render them in Maya to display in your portfolio as an example of 3D artwork. But assembling a scene in UE4 and using screenshots or videos of it in your portfolio is allowed, as long as the intention is to exhibit it or use it via UE4. (This is not legal advice and I’m not a lawyer, just my understanding of reading the license terms.)
You are definitely permitted under the license to use the free assets in a portfolio work. You have a separate, I suppose ethical, question about whether you should include works that aren’t yours in a portfolio which I’ll leave to the community to provide feedback.
