Can I Use Bump Maps With Subsurface Scattering?

I’m currently creating a character but don’t wan’t to have too many polygons, so I try to fake a lot with normal and bump maps. Let’s take the ear for example, I’ll just model the very basic shape, but will add the hole via bump map.

Will it work when using subsurface scattering? Or do I have to model the ear entirely?
