Can I create characters and animations from scratch with the Unreal engine?

Hello.

There’s a good character model in the template for the Unreal engine (Manny), but he has a very realistic appearance.

I’d like to prototype a game featuring a deformed character (SD character). And I want to make special animations of the character myself.

Can I do this in the Unreal engine? Or should I try using the Blender?
Thank you for being so kind to a beginner.

Hey there @hysecha! Welcome to the community! So the modeling/UVing/texturing/rigging of the character would have to be done in another program such as Blender before coming over to Unreal as the engine isn’t so much a modeling suite and more so an environment to manipulate content. However you can absolutely set up the control rig system and even animate the character directly in Unreal! I’ll include some tutorials and documentation below that can help you with getting your first try at a character rolling in Unreal. Let me know if you have any questions!

He goes about retargeting to the Manny skeleton but if you have your own preferred rig and don’t want to get similar bones to Manny you don’t have to do that, you can import your own animations from blender, or even make them with the control rig stuff I sent above.
