Well, the source code is available to you so you could modify the engine and change anything you like. Although, creating a plugin would be the better way so that you can more easily update the engine code.
The colours of the node connectors are defined by their type: eg. booleans are red, floats are green, component references are light blue, etc., so the preset colours can be a useful indicator.

Just discovered that it is possible to do this within the engine!
It’s under Editor Preferences > Content Editors > Graph Editors

Yes, Pin Colors will change the color of the connectors of variables and components.
Just wanted to stop in and say you’re a lifesaver for this. My color-blind self could NOT see the connections for bytes.
