I can't say anything except that everything was working yesterday until suddenly it wasn't. It feels like one of those moments where you've clicked a keyboard shortcut that you didn't know existed and you don't know what it was or how to undo what you've done. Basically if I'm in 'plan view' I can see everything but I cannot select anything. If I select the object in a different view or in the scene graph I can see it highlight and the gizmo appears, but when I am in plan view, the gizmo isn't active so I can't move anything or click anywhere in the scene to select anything else. (sidebar: I can click off the object in the scene to deselect the active object but then the gizmo disappears and nothing else is activated. So weird. 😣 And frustrating.
I can toggle to every different view, it's just that I cannot edit anything when I'm in the top-down (plan) view. Everything else looks normal in every view, but the gizmo is visible but not 'active' in the plan view.

Thank you for posting in the community and it sounds like you pressed the [ O ] Key which toggles the views, keep pressing it until you get back to perspective mode.

I think I may have asked the question wrong. The problem is with the gizmo and it only occurs when I've toggled to the plan (aka top-down) view. I've edited the question above. Thanks for helping me understand that I might have asked the wrong question. Do you have any suggestions based on the new information I've added?
In fairness, this may be a bug in the program and not my fault at all. If it is a bug in the program though, it's a deep one because I wasn't doing anything particularly interesting. I was just populating the streets surrounding my landscape architecture model site with streetlights and ensuring they were coming on and off correctly.
