I have been messing with a model that I have ran through ****** as well as ******. Both of those programs used all my photos for this model, about 250 photos.
What my photos are is a grid pattern from a UAV looking straight down over a landscape. I then also have drone shots from an angle at different closeness to a natural arch. I then have shots from a digital cannon camera of the arch from inside the arch.
My problem is Capturing Reality does not use any, and I mean not a single one of the overhead grid pattern shots from the drone. It only uses the angle shots and the shots from the cannon camera. Not having this issue in either of the 2 other software, I assume I am missing a step or something. I even followed directions from this forum to turn off the gps data from the drone, but I get the same results.
the reasons why its not properly align the data together is a missing overlap, if is there not enought data then the alignment can fail. What settings have you used for ALIGNMENT ?
delete all COMPONENTS in the project and keep only largest one ( most pictures aligned ) and use these settings for ALIGNMENT
Well, if it works in the other programs, then I know it has enough overlap. I believe all my aerial shots have a minimum of 50% overlap, more on most of them. Generally, I do a 70% sidelap and frontlap for photogrammetry.
I tried your settings, and I get the same results, except it only used about 50 out of the 250± photos that I imported. I mean, if the software does not match them together, is there a way to shoot differently for this software to process it all correctly? The results I am getting on projects that are just by my canon by hand/tripod or just by my UAV work splendid. Better results than other programs. Just on this more complicated model they not jiving together at all.
What it seems like to me, after running several sets of data through the software, is that it does not handle vegetation that well. What I mean is it is not aligning images that are of a mainly forested area. I noticed that in other sets of data that I fed it that were mostly clear. It did not handle the vegetated areas well at all. Is that just a limitation?

Other software did not provide such quality that provide RealityCapture.
For example one of popular photogrammetry software can hold tie points with reprojection error bigger than 5px but align all images. And as result you will have blobs but not mesh. If you optimize to 0.5 (default in RC?) you will lost many cameras.
And another point. As far as you move from center of image, than bigger distortion you have, and this distortion not always covered by mathematical models. So try imagine 50% overlap is mean that about 50% of this overlap is not enough for good reprojection. And you have only 25% of your image that good. And as result this tie points can be dropped, and not used in camera triangulation.

That is definitely for sure! Thanks for the insight, I am extremely new at this and been trying to find a program I like that is reasonably priced and has enough control.
I would assume in this situation that the problem is my shots then? What kind of overlap would you recommend then for 3D modeling of a natural feature, etc? Cause what I have been using is more the standard for aerial photogrammetry as that is part of what I am trying to do as a surveyor. To create localized detailed DEM’s and such.
And on another note, what setting do I need to change from 0.5? I’d like to mess with that for fun, but I see that I would want to optimize it for any actual modeling of a natural feature.
I went and shot a new scene, a building. My problem is this time it used the UAV images but not the cannon images from tripod. Huge overlap this time. 80% from drone on side and frontlap. From ground it at least that much if not more.
If I can’t get it to pull these images together before the end of my 30 day membership, I don’t see why I should continue since I can not figure out why in the world it will not work.
