Building Static Lighting Data very slow

back to using the latest build and found that the static lighting build time takes ages when compared to earlier builds. my Imp_City map would re-build lighting with-in a few minutes now it’s taking 15-20 mins, yes i know you can now still work in the editor whilst its doing the lighting build but shouldn’t there be an option some where visible for a fast build or build in back ground.

to be very honest using the default scene as a base give very bad lighting now, i’d say even worst than udk

Hey George,

I am investigating this build lighting issue. When you say “the default scene as a base give very bad lighting now, i’d say even worst than udk” do you mean in build time or shading? If the shadows look worse, could you provide a screenshot? If it is taking longer to build the default scene, how much longer? Does it take longer than a minute?

maybe just my bad map making skills, but i use the default map then delete the meshes then add mine.
increase the size of the importance volume to fit the map (maybe bad).
the build type is set to preview
this map used to re-build in ca 2 mins
now take up to 20 mins

the shadows on the meshes look bad to me, i just the same sort of set up in udk

I’ve got a map I’ve been working on that bakes pretty slow on Preview and when I try to do a Production Level bake I waited 10 minutes and it never ticked up past 0%. I’ve got 10 spotlights and a few hundred modular components.

On a different project (Cat Sniper) a scene with slightly less lights and pieces bakes fine. Is it possible that it’s falling down in the somewhat denser map because these components have not be textured yet? Could there be a baking issue when the default material is assigned?

Its also worth noting that when I imported the un-textured components I had to manually set the lightmap index to 1.

This one baked slowly / not at all on Production setting:

This one baked fine:

ok as an example here’s a pic of the same map (as close as i could make it) meshes lighting, builds on preview in udk in ca 2-5 mins

Actually, I ran it again and gave it more time. It does work. Turns out I’m just impatient. When I get materials on the pieces I’ll see if it goes faster.
