Bug moving megascans-assets

Hi im new to ue5 and i cant understand how i can move assets to different folders.I mean can i store my assets in my hard drive and just copy paste them? I tried to do the “trick” move my asset here inside editor and it take like ages…

I Also tried this in megascans from quixel and didint work,i need to download them again , why?

Thanks in advance.

Hey there @Thanosrom! Moving any assets outside of the editor can cause issues with the content registry not knowing where they are, which in turn makes them disappear or need redirectors. It’s recommended if you have to move assets within the editor to avoid this, but I do understand that large/many assets at once take more time, but the reason for this is that UE is handling content locations in the content registry constantly and is necessary for operation.

In many cases it does “just work” when you drag things outside of editor, but it’s more the exception than the rule in situations like this. If needed, gradually change folders over as you import more assets to reduce your overhead.

I recently re-create a project and had my assets in an external hard drive , so what i do in this situation? UE cant handle them ?

Also in UE seems to work but i understand what are you saying , in Quixel bridge if i do that it does not work for sure…any recommendation about those also?

Thanks.

It depends if the issue with the assets missing is dependency or registry. If everything else is getting reregistered fine, but the master material the assets connect to isn’t preset it may remain unable to be seen in the content browser.

If for example you’re downloading the assets from quixel, then migrating them, are you getting every dependency they have when you go to migrate?

Im not sure if i understand the question.

I moved to my megascan asset from documents->quixel(in my pc) where my assets are stored, deleted and paste the same folder again in the same path to check if it works with just copy - paste method.

After that i moved to the same assets in quixel marketplace and i could not add them in my project .I had to download it again(but the folders was there) … so im guessing i cant use copy paste from external drives also ?

For example i copy a folder of assets from quixel bridge paste them in my external drive and copy them again and paste them in my project megascan folder. This was not worked for me…

Is this because i needed to make any fixes with the registry ?
Or quixel had the problem?

Im tyring to just find a solution to move my assets in my external drive and make them reusable because they are too big for my internal hard drive and it can not handle them . Are there any good solution on this??

I dont want to migrate anything to other projects… just move my assets as a backup and use them whenever i want without download them again .

Thanks.

Ahhh I understand! So the library itself keeps what you’ve downloaded anyway, and when you go to select it in your bridge it will show you have it and just need to import it. To change this library’s path, head to your preferences in bridge:

then change the path to the new location.

move everything in the old location to the new one, then when accessing bridge again it will always pull from the local library first, then look online if it doesn’t have a copy of what you are requesting.

So if i copy and paste the old megascans to my external drive from my internal disk and change the path from quixel bridge to my external drive will this work for my old assets too?

Will i be able to re-use them ?

That should work for the megascans specific assets (as that’s what I tested on my side and they used the local version). In my testing (on Windows 10/UE5.2) it seems to be working fine. Let me know how it goes on your end!

I think the best way to its to migrate from a project . Changing the paths etc seems risky i dont trust the editor for that also in quixel it has weird names in the assets so i will not know what to pick unless i see it inside the editor .

Anyways i mark the solution as this.

To migrate all in 1 project and take them from there what i need so begginers also now what to do .

Thank you
