Hi,
I would like to report a reproducible performance issue related to Epic Online Services (EOS) and high polling-rate mice.
The issue appeared recently. Games that previously ran normally started suffering from severe frame-time stuttering whenever the mouse was moved.
Affected games I personally reproduced this with:
- Zenless Zone Zero
- Honkai: Star Rail
Both games are launched through Epic Games Launcher.
The stuttering becomes especially severe when the mouse polling rate is set to 8000 Hz. Lowering the polling rate significantly reduces or eliminates the issue.
However, this does not appear to be caused by a specific mouse, GPU, CPU, or PC configuration.
I reproduced the same behavior on two completely different PCs, using:
- Different CPUs
- Different GPUs
- Different motherboards/platforms
- Completely different mouse models
- Both mice support and were running at 8000 Hz
Other games on the same PCs do not necessarily show this behavior.
Initially, I suspected the games themselves or the high mouse polling rate. However, I found that the actual behavior is strongly related to the EOS components installed under:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\Epic Online Services\managedArtifacts\
Inside managedArtifacts there is an active artifact directory containing EOS components such as the EOS Overlay renderer / hook components.
Workaround that completely fixes the issue:
- Exit Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Open:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\Epic Online Services\managedArtifacts\ - Rename the active artifact directory, for example by simply appending
2to the folder name. - Restart Epic Games Launcher.
- Launch the game normally through Epic.
After doing this, I can leave the mouse at 8000 Hz and the stuttering disappears completely.
Interestingly, overall frame pacing also feels noticeably smoother than before, even outside the obvious severe stuttering cases.
I also tested disabling/removing the older EOS Overlay files located under the Epic Launcher Portal\Extras\Overlay directory, but that did not fix the problem. Renaming the active directory inside Epic Online Services\managedArtifacts did.
This strongly suggests that the currently deployed EOS artifact / Overlay component is involved in the regression.
The high polling rate appears to be a trigger or amplifier, rather than necessarily the root cause itself, because keeping the mouse at 8000 Hz works normally once the active managedArtifacts component is prevented from loading.
Reproduction summary:
EOS managedArtifacts active + 8000 Hz mouse → severe stuttering when moving the mouse
Lower polling rate → stuttering reduced
8000 Hz + managedArtifacts active directory renamed → stuttering completely gone
This behavior is reproducible across two very different PCs and two different mouse models.
I have also found recent reports from other Epic users describing similar mouse-movement stuttering and resolving it by disabling/renaming the current EOS managedArtifacts components.
Could Epic please investigate whether a recent Epic Online Services / EOS Overlay update introduced a regression in mouse input handling or frame pacing?
If required, I can provide additional system information, logs, polling-rate comparisons, or perform further testing.
Thank you.
