i am so screwed i was working on s project for a few weeks back in january and was really making good progress tho since january i nad no time due to uni studdies. my break is coming up so i decide to continue on the project only to realise… ITS GONE DUE TO A WINDOWS UPGRADE I DID IN MARCH AND ALL MY BACKUPS ARE WAY TO OLD COMPARED TO THE ONE I LOST. However i have a compiled verduon that is opened and not in .pak form so all content is visible tho the editor doesnt pick it up btw sorry fir spelling mistakes
Even if it’s not in .pak form the files are still cooked which isn’t the same as the files you normally use in a project
Yeah I relised this I’m just wondering there any possible way of opening it as a project???anyrhing thing at all??? Or maybe converting it back to be usable in a project.
Perhaps http://sourceforge.net/projects/dragonunpacker/
Edit Ah, sry “not in .pak form”
**** I’m so screwed, I worked a lot on it please anyone have any answers, the files are the same as normal project file" .UASSET" tho just have been cooked, please anyone if you can help comment, any help is better then none
BUMP, please need help
From my amateur point of view, you have no chance to decompile your “product”, to get back the ressources, like nodes, or gamelogic in an editable way.
If that would be so easy, some ppl would use it, to decompile everything, modifying it and resell as own stuff.
Some years ago i lost a one man biz, because of Hd- crash, was a very “dark” experience.
I know, how you feel, even that is no help for you, do not get frustrated, rethink your backup system, for future projects.
Use external stuff (www/hd) for backup important things.
Think about it, when you had completely finished your project, and lost it then, it would be harder for you then now.
Best regards
Yes i understand what you are saying, but I compiled the game in developer mode so i asume companies dont ship there games in developer mode i guess developer mode is kinda usless like this
and your right, ile just have to start again atleast i have a few blueprints drawn out still that i could use to figure out the otherones, thank you and still if anyone knows any other way pleaseeee any advise helps.
bump- after reading more into dx12 i heard unreal/epic where doing a event where people could bring in there project that are already cooked “as long as there not cooked as .pak” and from there open them up on the demo floor then from there re-cook them with the dx12 api activated, i wasnot interested in the d12 api but more that people where opening up there project that are already compiled so it gave me some hope, please UNREALLL HELP ME GET THIS PROJECT BACK IN THE EDITOR.
I don’t know that that’s true.
You can also try and see if you have Windows backup system set up–you can right click on a file/folder and go to Properties and then select the Previous Versions tab, and if it has an older version available it will list it there so you can retrieve it.
i have a old version already its the newer version thats been deleted :((( darn it
Well you say you did a Windows upgrade, elaborate as if it was in in place upgrade (not a clean install) then you wouldn’t have lost any files. So I assume it was a clean install then, as you reformatted the entire drive.
If not double check there is not a ‘Windows.Old’ folder on you C:, as that might have some old files on there.
You could try testdisk:
But I doubt you will get anything useful out of it now considering how much time has passed.
Lesson to be learnt here: Take backups regularly and not on the same computer you use Unreal on.
Sorry I know that’s not a solution , but in the end its rule 1 of anything important you might want in life that’s stored on a computer.
Get yourself a Gmail account, install Google drive and sync up a backup folder. And then get yourself a cheap USB stick and copy your stuff on to that as well.
That way you wont lose anything ever again.
yeah i usally back up everything, i mean i have backups of the project but early versions. that one night i did a install the back up was on that oc while the actual cooked project was on a portable HDD that i take to uni. Doest matter i got alot of the blueprints documented so i can always easily get back to where i was its not the difficulty im worried about its the time it will take, would take atleast a few days non stop work to get back to where i was, oh well, thanks again guys.
you will not believe this ****, I used to have a old test server that never realy worked properly, i mean i had a few test servers that i used for network testing and so on for my uni studies. well this one was a small 50gb system, and somehow “i really dont know how” it must have been connected to my old pc because EVERYTHING IT BACKED UP…I AM SO BLESSED. I have not only found my projects but i have found the last version that i was working on along with all my notes even the unreal engine itself “Keep in mind my project is 16gb” so for everyhing to have gotten backed up without me even knowing is truly amazing. I have been working on a new project for a couple of weeks now tho i always get stuck and keep thiking “if only i had my old files and notes” now i can migrate my new assets into my old project and everything should work amillion times better. Thank you everyone who replied and remember ALL-WAYS KEEP A BACKUP, OR IN MY CASE A TEST BACKUP SERVER.
Glad it worked out…
In case it hadn’t I was about to try the old “don’t worry, things are always better when you remake them from scratch” line
hahaha yeah if only that was true, I find if your not doing it right the first time then your not trying hard enough thanks again
