Better Input Support: Full Actiion Remapping & end the Y Axis Hack

Hi Everyone,

It’s passionate plea time

So UE4 has been around for a while now, but there are two issues that people still run into and ask about: not being able to to Remap actions (buttons, keys & sticks) in Blueprints and wanting to replace the ‘Y Axis’ hack in the BaseGame.ini file with a proper editor option. I think it’s time we united to get these.

A response from Epic to a post I put on AnswerHUB regarding the ‘Y Axis’ hack has prompted me to turn to you, the community, about this.

I’ve included a full explanation of the ‘Y Axis’ hack and how it affects Mice, Touch Screens and Right Analogue Sticks on Gamepads. You can find it, and Epic’s response, here:

I appreciate Epic’s stance, but considering how much has changed in UE4 over the past year, I don’t see how fixing the Y Axis hack will be such a major issue for current projects.

I also know that Rama made an excellent controller remapper plugin last year, although from what I remember, it’s not possible to use this on a Blueprint only project.

As someone that passionately believes in of the lowering entry barrier in games via remapping controls I believe that we’re long overdue these changes, especially since Epic already provide support for subtitles and colour blind modes. As someone that has worked in the gaming industry itself for 14 years, I know how easy it is for devs to overlook this support when it’s not included in TRCs. And as a UE4 user, I know how frustrating it is to first use the editor and try to find the **** ‘Invert Y Axis’ option. But I also know how easy it is to support these and that by including button and stick remapping and replacing the ‘Invert Y Axis’ hack with a proper option in the editor, Epic will be taking the pressure off of developers to support these options.

And as a consumer, I’m so fed up of so many games not supporting Southpaw that I paid $160 for a custom Dual Shock 4 with an extra button that lets me swap the sticks at will.

So I hope that you, the community, will show your support for these changes by voting yes in the poll above and that Epic will listen. Even if you yourself don’t remap buttons or sticks in games, I’m sure you’re frequently going to option screens to set your Y Axis preferences and can empathise with those that need alittle more than that.

And if you’d like to read more about the benefits of accessibility in games, then I suggest you check out these two websites

And you can find some lists for what kind of support has and has not been provided in games over the last generation

http://southpawgamers.com/page/games (although Alien: Isolation does support Southpaw - thank you Creative Assembly)

And as of last year, TIGA now includes an ‘Accessibility Category’.

Thank you
