Best way to implement melee hitstop mechanic in first person

As the title says, I want melee weapons (swords to be precise) to feel like they go through bodies, not just air.
The most lazy solution seems to set time dilation to something like 0.9 when the hit happens and reset it after a second. But I’m not sure if that’s a good way to do it
That’s about all I can think of now. I think it’s possible to use IK or physics simulation, but again I’m not sure how and what’s the best way. Plus I have no idea how to stop montage (that’s what I use for attack animations) midair
