Best way to do character dismemberment?

Hi there

So i have a dismemberment system in place: shoot a limb, hide the bone, spawn dismembered limb, apply impulse: this all works fine

However the torso of the character will have a hole in the mesh from where they were shot, for example if an NPC loses their lower arm, the elbow joint on the character will look wrong because it hasnt been modelled to look damaged. If they lose their leg from the knee down, the knee joint will have a hole etc.

My question is what is the best way to get the body of the character to look dismembered? I tried making the character up of all the separate parts but then it caused weird shading issues with all the cuts between joints.

Really want something like Fallout, where the NPC will have a bloody stump from the limb they lost
